research topics related to the marine cryosphere, in particular physical
properties and dynamics of sea ice. The scientific work will include
calibration and validation studies of remote sensing data and algorithms
of operational and upcoming satellite sensors, as well as airborne
remote sensing techniques. Emphasis will be on remote sensing
application to climate research, validation techniques, and algorithm
and methodology development. There will be opportunity to participate in
polar fieldwork. Publishing in international scientific journals,
writing of funding applications, and participation in public outreach
work is expected.
Applicants should hold a PhD related to remote sensing, and preferably
to the marine cryosphere. NPI seeks candidates with knowledge in sea ice
remote sensing and one or several of the following fields: signal
processing, statistics, programming, and geophysical science. Scientific

- Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution seeks Research Scientist
Biology Department
Woods Hole, Massachusetts
The Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
(WHOI) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position on
their Scientific Staff.
Candidates are sought to complement the existing interdisciplinary
strengths in oceanography and marine ecology
(http://www.whoi.edu/biology). Candidates in all areas are welcome to
apply but WHOI is particularly interested in individuals who conduct
research on the ecology and biological oceanography of polar ecosystems,
and particularly polar sea ice, including biological-physical and
biological-chemical interactions. Areas of expertise may focus on one or
more trophic levels from microbial communities to invertebrates to
vertebrates. Opportunities exist for collaboration with faculty across
the institution working on climate change, sea ice physics, and polar
oceanography.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally
recognized and externally funded research program and also will have the
opportunity to advise graduate students and teach courses in the
MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography
(http://www.whoi.edu/jointprogram/). Candidates hired at the junior
level will receive an initial appointment for four years with salary
guaranteed.
Applications should include a three-page research statement, a
curriculum vitae with the names and addresses of four references, and
copies of up to three relevant publications. Candidates should initiate
the process by applying online at:
http://tinyurl.com/WHOI-BiologyResearchScientist. The cover letter,
statement, curriculum vitae, and relevant publications should then be
sent by email as pdf files to the chair of the Biology Department
(biologychair [at] whoi.edu).
Application review begins: 2 January 2012.
