The Akureyri Division of the Icelandic Institute of Natural History
invites applications for the position of Curator/Researcher in vascular
plant biology. The position will be based in Akureyri, Iceland.
The successful applicant is expected to curate the vascular plants
collections held at the institute, and to conduct research on the
taxonomy of Icelandic vascular plants. The institute is a governmental
research facility located in Reykjavik and Akureyri and doing basic
research in the fields of botany, zoology, and geology. It has the
largest collections in Iceland of Icelandic vascular plants, totaling
some 65,000 herbarium sheets. At the Akureyri Division the fungi and
lichen-herbaria are located along with a part of the vascular plant
collection.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Botany and have some experience in
vascular plant research with particular reference to their taxonomy and
distribution. Familiarity with molecular methodology is preferable.

- University of New England seeks Endowed Research Chair
Marine Sciences

The University of New England (UNE) seeks an exceptional individual to
lead its expanding programs in the marine sciences. The position will be
based in Biddeford, Maine.
The successful candidate will hold the title of Doherty Endowed Research
Chair, and will serve as Chair of the Department of Marine Sciences,
overseeing both the Center for Land-Sea Interactions (CLSI) and the
Marine Science Center (MSC). The position requires a model mentor,
teacher, and researcher who is qualified to hold the position of a
tenured professor or associate professor. The successful candidate will
bring an established, externally funded research program; have proven
experience and skills in leadership, administration, mentoring, and
strategic planning; and possess the ability to work cooperatively with
university and extramural partners to advance the mission of UNE's
marine sciences department. The ability to build connections between the
marine sciences and human and community health disciplines is preferred.
The new chair/director will be expected to:
- Ensure excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service;
- Increase the level and scope of extramural funding that supports
academic and research initiatives in the MSC and the CLSI;
- Develop a national reputation for UNE's marine science programs;
- Expand on UNE's excellence in graduate and undergraduate research;
and
- Enhance the programs' outreach efforts in the community and the
region.

Anthropological Linguistics

The Departments of English and Anthropology at the University of Alaska
Anchorage seek applications for a joint tenure-track assistant professor
position in anthropological linguistics. The position will begin in
August 2012 and is based in Anchorage, Alaska.
The position is a tripartite appointment that will involve teaching two
courses in the Department of English and one in the Department of
Anthropology each semester; maintaining an active research program in
the field of specialization; and providing service to the departments,
university, and community. The successful candidate will have the
opportunity to develop new courses for both departments, and candidates
are invited to address this in their cover letter.
The position requires a PhD in anthropology, English, linguistics, or a
related discipline by 1 July 2012. Academic concentration must be in
anthropological linguistics, linguistic anthropology, or a very closely
allied subfield. Applicants should have a record of ethnographic
fieldwork, broadly defined, and be capable of teaching courses in
linguistics and anthropology at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels. The geographical area of expertise is open, but candidates with
a research agenda involving the circumpolar or northern Pacific Rim
regions are particularly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate's
application will demonstrate a record of or commitment to research
involving indigenous peoples.
