  1. University of Hamburg seeks Research Associate
    Numerical Modeling
    Hamburg, Germany

The Institute of Oceanography at the University of Hamburg seeks a
research associate with a strong background in numerical modeling. The
position will preferably run from 1 November 2011 to 30 September 2014,
and will be based in Hamburg, Germany.

The successful applicant will work with a climate research project
network of university and leading independent institutes in Hamburg. The
project is a subset of the Ice Prediction and Ice-Routing-Optimization
(IRO-2) project, entitled "Development of an ice prediction system
including remote sensing." The project will apply the existing
circulation model HAMSOM to the Barents Sea. In order to do this, HAMSOM
has to be coupled to a coarser arctic model as well as to a regional
meteorological model. Moreover, an ice module has to be implemented into
HAMSOM. The project will involve the following steps:

- Preparation and implementation of boundary values;
- Development and implementation of interfaces to couple oceanic and
meteorological model;
- Optimization of the model system;
- Realization of iterative coupling between oceanic and
meteorological model;
- Application of the model system to the IRO-2 test region; and
- Validation of results and documentation of project achievements.

Candidates should have experience in numerical modeling and a strong
background in physics, physical oceanography, or meteorology. Knowledge
of FORTRAN is required. A PhD degree in oceanography or a related
subject would be beneficial, as would experience with ice modeling
and/or the circulation model HAMSOM.

To apply, please send an application letter, curriculum vitae, degree
certificate(s), etc., to Thomas Pohlmann via email
