On 25 August 2011, Dr. Karl Erb, Director of the National Science
Foundation's Office of Polar Programs, issued an update on the status of
icebreaker support for the upcoming 2011-2012 Antarctic field season. In
the Dear Colleague letter, Dr. Erb reported that NSF has entered into a
letter contract for the services of the Vladimir Ignatyuk, a
diesel-powered Russian icebreaker owned by the Murmansk Shipping
Company. This ship is the sister to Canada's Terry Fox.
