1. Alaska Department of Fish and Game seeks Social Scientist
   Subsistence Resource Specialist
   Anchorage, Alaska

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Subsistence seeks a
senior level social scientist. This position as a Subsistence Resource
Specialist III is fulltime, and will be based in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Research Duties of this position include proposing, designing, and
implementing projects documenting the subsistence way of life in Alaska.
This includes projects documenting subsistence harvest levels, areas of
use for subsistence, and traditional ecological knowledge as well as
ethnographic studies. The researcher will be able to travel throughout
southeast, south-central, southwest, and interior Alaska.

Required qualifications include the following:

- Knowledge of project management;
- Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods;
- Experience conducting research, including the administration of
household surveys;
- Skills in written and oral communication and the ability to
present research findings both orally and in writing;
- Skills in cross cultural communication and working in rural
communities;
- Experience with or knowledge of research funding sources and
research proposal writing; and
- Knowledge of hunting and fishing regulations and how regulations
are made.

2. Internship Available

The Aleut International Association (AIA) announces an internship
opportunity for 2011-2013. The position requires 6-8 weeks per year, in
the Anchorage office for local applicants or via telecommuting for
applicants based elsewhere.

The fields of work include international arctic affairs, indigenous
issues, environmental issues, natural resource management, and
non-profit management. Applications are invited from individuals who
have completed or are currently enrolled in a relevant college degree
program. Applicants must be Alaska residents, and should have good
communication skills. Preference will be given to Alaska Natives of
Aleut descent to the extent allowable by law. Attendance of at least one
international meeting per year (expenses paid by AIA) will be required.

The internship is unpaid, but a small stipend will be provided, as will
per diem for travel. The successful candidate will be expected to write
a paper on a subject of mutual interest.
