Ocean/Ice Modeling
British Antarctic Survey
Cambridge, United Kingdom
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment
Research Council, seeks to appoint a postgraduate researcher to develop
and run ocean models. The position is a 30 month fixed term appointment
and is based in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
BAS aims to undertake a world-class program of scientific research in
the Antarctic. The role of this position will be to set up and run a
high-resolution regional ice-ocean model of the Amundsen Sea to
investigate the physical processes that control the inflow of warm
Circumpolar Deep Water to the continental shelf and the impacts of this
on the melt rates of the floating ice shelves. The overall goal is to
investigate ocean forcing on glacier evolution over the past two
centuries in order to explain current behavior and to ascertain when the
rapid changes that are currently underway may have started.
The successful candidate will have experience in the development and
running of ocean models. Qualified candidates will have earned a first
degree in physical science and/or mathematics plus a PhD (or
equivalent). Applications from all sections of the community, including
international candidates, are welcome.
Application deadline: Sunday, 7 August 2011.

International Forestry Resources and Institutions Network
University of Michigan - School of Natural Resources and Environment
Ann Arbor, Michigan
The International Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI) Network,
located at the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and
Environment, seeks a postdoctoral fellow for a one-year appointment
beginning Fall 2011. The position is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The fellow will conduct and support research for several existing
projects on institutional and social dimensions of forest outcomes and
climate adaptation, community forest governance, and land cover change.
As necessary, the fellow will also assist with the preparation of new
grant proposals, coordination of IFRI field research, and organization
of research workshops in national and international contexts. The
successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of Professor
Arun Agrawal who coordinates the IFRI network.
A combination of scholarly imagination and rigorous interdisciplinary
empirical and analytical skills will provide applicants a competitive
edge. Strong statistical training, experience working with complex
social-ecological datasets, and some spatial analysis skills, such as
geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing , are especially
desirable. Qualified applicants may come from a range of fields
including political science, public policy, geography, sociology,

- Assistant Professor Position Available
Water and Earth System Engineering
The City College of New York
New York, New York
The City College of New York seeks applications for an Assistant
Professor in Water and Earth System Engineering. This is a tenure-track
position in the Civil Engineering Department and will be based in New
York, New York.
The position will promote innovations in the hydrologic aspects of earth
systems science, water resources assessment, and human-water interaction
studies using advanced data assimilation, cyber-infrastructure, and
geospatial modeling. The successful candidate is expected to train
students in engineering and affiliated earth sciences fields and to
implement an externally funded research program in areas related to one
or more of these interests. A teaching and research focus on the
application of models supported by digital data sets, including remote
sensing, should lead to the capacity to model all key elements of the
continental water cycle and to apply this new knowledge to human-water
studies. The candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and
graduate (MS, PhD) courses and to develop an integral association with
the City University of New York's Environmental Crossroads Initiative
and NOAA-CREST.
Applicants must hold a PhD at the time of appointment in an affiliated
field of engineering or earth systems science. Candidates with
postdoctoral or equivalent professional experience are especially
encouraged to apply. The ability to teach successfully, an interest in
productive scholarship or creative achievement, and the ability to
cooperate with others for the good of the institution are also required.
