- Prince William Sound Science Center seeks
Science Education Director
Cordova, Alaska
The Prince William Sound Science Center (PWSSC) seeks a Science
Education Director to grow their education program and join a team of
enthusiastic educators who implement science, environmental, and
experiential education programs. The position will be based in Cordova,
Alaska.
The Science Education Director will help oversee delivery of the PWSSC's
portfolio of education programs including community outreach,
classroom-based "Discovery Room" for grades K-6, underwater robotics for
middle school, and summer camps and outdoor "experiential" education
programs in oceanography and conservation for teens.
In addition to their traditional science education programs, the PWSSC
is currently developing new web-based capacity to deliver science to
classrooms and informal science education settings. The successful
candidate will join the "Headwaters to Ocean" (H2O) Science Education
Applications Team.
Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree, with an education, marine,
or environmental science-related major preferred. A minimum of two
years' work experience in education, marine, or science-related
activities is desired. The ideal candidate will have developed and
delivered a variety of science and/or ecological education programs.
To apply, please submit a letter of interest, resume, and three
references to Nancy Bird (nbird [at] pwssc.org). The anticipated start date
is mid-August.
This position is open until filled.

- Alfred Wegener Institute seeks PhD Student
Arctic Coastal Processes and Submarine Permafrost
Potsdam, Germany
The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) invites
applications for a PhD student position (Doktorand) in the field of
arctic coastal processes and submarine permafrost.
The PhD student will work within the joint Helmholtz-Russia research
group, "Assessing the Sensitivity of Arctic Coastal Dynamics." This
bilateral project (with Helmholtz Center Geesthacht, Moscow State
University, Melnikov Permafrost Institute of Yakutsk, and the Nansen
International Environmental and Remote Sensing Center of Saint
Petersburg) studies the environmental forcing of changing coastal
morphology, mass flux in the near-shore zone and their controls on
subsea permafrost. The project aims at recovering data of modern
processes in the Siberian Arctic and modeling future changes as a
reaction on global warming. The relevant research in Potsdam includes
GIS-based, geophysical, and modeling approaches.
The successful applicant will be tasked with incremental development of
conceptual and numerical models of permafrost evolution during marine
transgression, coastal erosion, and inundation based on appropriate
input data.
The position requires a diploma or Master's in natural sciences,
preferably in the geosciences and/or physics. Experience in GIS and/or
numerical modeling is required. Participation in field campaigns in the
Arctic is preferred but not a requirement for the position. Good working
knowledge of English and Russian (both written and spoken) is an
advantage.
To apply, please send (quoting reference number 41/D-Geo-P) a motivation

- University of Texas seeks Postdoctoral Researcher
Coastal Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Dynamics
Port Aransas, Texas
A postdoctoral research position is available as part of an NSF-funded
project that is investigating the role of land-derived organic matter
and inorganic nutrients within coastal waters of the Alaskan Beaufort
Sea. The position will be based in Port Aransas, Texas.
The project is a collaborative effort involving scientists from the
University of Texas (Dunton and McClelland) and the University of
Maryland (Crump). The position is based at the University of Texas
Marine Science Institute (http://www.utmsi.utexas.edu/), and involves
fieldwork at remote locations in the Arctic.
Experience with biogeochemical cycling, trophic relationships, and/or
natural abundance isotope applications in coastal ecosystems is
desirable. Competitive applicants will also demonstrate a significant
record of research productivity.
To apply, please send a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, and a
list of three references to James McClelland (jimm [at] mail.utexas.edu). The
successful candidate is expected to begin working on the project in fall
2011 or early 2012.
