  1. AMAP Secretariat seeks Deputy Executive Secretary
    Arctic Council Working Group
    Oslo, Norway

The Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) Secretariat seeks
a Deputy Executive Secretary. The appointment will be on a 3-year
contract with a potential for extension, and will be based in Oslo,
Norway.

The international AMAP Secretariat is responsible for preparing and
implementing decisions made by the Arctic Council and the AMAP Working
Group. The primary tasks of the Deputy Executive Director are to assist
the Executive Secretary in the daily operations of the Secretariat and
to strengthen the scientific and technical capacity of the secretariat.

Depending on qualifications and experience, responsibilities of the
Deputy Executive Secretary will include:

- Organizing and providing secretariat support to scientific
assessments on circum-arctic environmental and climate issues
performed by AMAP;
- Preparing documents for and providing secretariat assistance at
AMAP meetings;
- Contributing to the documentation and implementation of AMAPs
monitoring program; and
- Representing AMAP at meetings when requested.

The position will require international travel. AMAP members include the
eight Arctic countries and Arctic Council permanent participants, as
well as partners from other countries and international organizations.
An understanding of international cooperation and appreciation of
different cultures, including arctic indigenous cultures, is needed.

Qualifications and key experience requirements of the successful
applicant include:

- Holding an advanced university degree (PhD or equivalent) in a
discipline relevant to the task of AMAP;
- Having a minimum of five years of professional experience in a
relevant field of work, preferably including experience in
international cooperation;
- Having ability to work with different organizations, cultures, and
stakeholders;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are
necessary, and working knowledge of other arctic language(s) will be
considered an asset.

    Nansen Professorship in Arctic Studies

The University of Akureyri seeks a Visiting Professor to fill the post
of Nansen Professorship in Arctic Studies. The post is awarded each year
for a twelve-month term and is based in Akureyri, Iceland.

The successful candidate should have a PhD (or equivalent experience)
with a strong academic background in arctic studies relevant to legal
issues as well as sustainable human development in the arctic regions.
The candidate should have experience in working across disciplines with
complex human, environmental, and social issues; strong communication
skills; research experience relating to the Arctic; participated in
international research networks; and a proven ability to obtain research
grants.

Primary responsibilities of the position will be to contribute to the
research, teaching, and further development of relevant programs at the
University of Akureyri; work closely with other researchers in
furthering the Northern research and instruction at the University of
Akureyri and contribute to the development of the University of the
Arctic; give public lectures on arctic issues in local, national, and
international forums; and participate in the contemporary debate on
changes in the Arctic. The formal period of employment starts 1 October
2012 with exact time subject to negotiations.

  1. University of Aberdeen seeks Postdoctoral Research Fellow
    Northern Colonialism

The University of Aberdeen seeks candidates for a postdoctoral research
fellowship in the Northern Colonialism: Historical Connections,
Contemporary Lives program. The position is full-time, funded for three
years, and based in Aberdeen, Scotland.

The Northern Colonialism program is a new research initiative, which
aims to foster new interdisciplinary research on the processes and
impact of colonialism in the North. The program builds upon existing
expertise in anthropology, archaeology, history, and geology. The
program is structured around three themes: Economies and Politics,
Environments, and Cultural Transformations. The North is defined here by
the intersection of climatic, environmental, historical, geopolitical,
and cultural conditions.

The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in anthropology,
archaeology, history, or a related discipline. Research experience in
these fields and experience in working across a combination of these
areas is desirable.

The successful candidate is expected to undertake research to address
the history and/or politics of northern colonial enterprises. The
position will have a key role in supporting the activities of the
Northern Colonialism program and is expected to contribute to the
organization of academic events and public outreach and assist with
securing external funding. The position will start 1 October 2012, or as
soon as possible thereafter.

GRID-Arendal has been extended. Applications for the Environmental
Policy Senior Polar and Cryosphere Expert will now be accepted until
Friday, 27 July 2012. The position will be based in Arendal, Norway.

The Environmental Policy Senior Polar and Cryosphere Expert will
participate in the planning, development, and implementation of the
division's activities. The candidate will be expected to support and/or
lead the UNEP Polar program, the Mountain and Cryosphere program, and
emerging polar and cryosphere activities.
