- Norwegian Meteorological Institute seeks Research Scientist
Section for Ocean and Ice
Tromso, Norway
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (NMI) seeks a research scientist
to work in the Section for Ocean and Ice. The position has a three-year
duration (with the possibility of extension to a permanent appointment)
and will be based in Tromso, Norway.
Activity within the Ocean and Ice Section encompasses numerical ocean
prediction, environmental prediction, climate studies, and analysis of
observations (in particular satellite remote sensing data). Remote
sensing work focuses on analysis of satellite data to obtain information
on ocean and cryosphere parameters, in particular sea ice and sea
surface temperature. The position will include development of methods
for objective satellite data analysis; prototyping, testing, and
organizing of software; and product validation and monitoring.
Candidates must have a PhD or Master's degree, or the equivalent, in
oceanography/meteorology, physics, applied mathematics, or a related
field. Experience with satellite data, extraction of geophysical
parameters, and mathematical/statistical methods is required, as is
programming in Linux and C.
Application deadline: Friday, 7 September 2012.

- Norwegian Polar Institute seeks Postdoctoral Fellow
Biodiversity Programme
Tromso, Norway
The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) seeks a postdoctoral fellow to work
in the Biodiversity Programme. The position has a three-year term, and
will be based in Tromso, Norway.
The successful applicant will participate in a project on the diet,
space use, and habitat selection of pygoscelid penguins (and possibly
also seals) in the sub Antarctic in relation to krill fishing (and
climate change). Field sites will include the South Orkneys Islands and
Bouvetoya in the South Atlantic.
Candidates must have a PhD in animal ecology, as well as a solid
background in biology with direct research experience dealing with
marine predator diving and spatial data. Solid skills in Excel, Access,
R programming, and multivariate statistics are required. Previous
experience in field camps is essential; polar region field experience in
particular will be viewed favorably.
Application deadline: Saturday, 15 September 2012.

Candidates must have strong analytic skills and a research record in
polar meteorology. Interesting research specialties include polar lows
(formation, dynamics, and prediction), modeling of coupled atmosphere -
sea - ice interaction, boundary layer meteorology, dynamics of icing,
convection phenomena, short timescale sea-temperature dynamics, and
computational methods.
Application deadline: Saturday, 15 September 2012.
