- ISMER seeks Candidates for Faculty Position
Physical Oceanography
Rimouski, Quebec, Canada
The Institute des Sciences de la Mer de Rimouski (ISMER) seeks
candidates to fill a regular faculty position in physical oceanography
with a specialization in physical-biogeochemical modeling. This is a
full-time, permanent, and tenure track position. The working language of
the position is French. The position is located in Rimouski, Quebec,
Canada.
The successful candidate will have experience as a physical
oceanographer or mathematician and expertise in marine biogeochemical
modeling and/or in data assimilation adapted to biological variables for
applications to estuarine and coastal marine systems. The successful
candidate will be encouraged to complement the current expertise,
develop his/her own research program, and collaborate with physicists,
geologists, chemists, and biologists from ISMER. As principal
investigator, he/she will seek funding for research programs and
equipment. The candidate will contribute to teaching objectives of ISMER
in oceanography at the master and doctorate levels.
The candidate must have a PhD in physical oceanography, or related
field, a minimum of one year of postdoctoral experience, and a
substantial list of publications at an international level in a field
related to the position. All qualified candidates will be considered,
however priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent
residents.
For further information about ISMER, please see: http://www.ismer.ca.
Review of applications will begin: Monday, 22 October 2012.
The position is open until filled.

- University of Copenhagen seeks PhD Candidates
Terrestrial Ecology
Copenhagen Denmark
The University of Copenhagen seeks candidates for two PhD positions in
the terrestrial ecology section of the biology department to work on a
project assessing emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from
arctic ecosystems under climate change. The start date for the positions
is 1 February 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter. The positions are
based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The research project will involve seasonal fieldwork in Greenland using
long-term field experiments to assess the effects of multiple factors of
climate change on plants, soil, and ecosystem processes, including VOC
emissions. The successful candidates will also be affiliated to the
Center for Permafrost (CENPERM) whose work integrates multidisciplinary
research of biogeochemical and physical processes across the major
climate zones of Greenland with the goal of developing new insights in
permafrost dynamics to improve the quantification and predictions of
changes in carbon and nitrogen pools and gas fluxes from arctic
ecosystems.
Position 1: the PhD candidate will work with soil-vegetation-plot and
ecosystem level VOC emissions, including the temporal and spatial
variation and different climate change manipulations. The work involves
mainly chamber but also some micrometeorological measurements. In
addition, the work includes isotope-labeling studies in laboratory.
Position 2: the PhD project will focus on the role of litter and soil
(including permafrost) in the release of VOCs from ecosystems to the
atmosphere. The PhD candidate will work with decomposition processes as
affected by climate change, including field studies and laboratory
incubations. The work also includes chemical and microbiological
analyses.
The successful candidates will have a Master's degree in biological or
earth sciences or a related field. Further requirements include
experience in fieldwork, preferably in the Arctic, and fluency in
written and spoken English. Experience in VOC and other trace gas flux
measurements, gas chromatography, and soil science/microbiology are
assets.
Application deadline: Wednesday, 31 October 2012.
Applications for this position should include a cover letter describing
personal qualities, research interests, and motivation for the
position(s); curriculum vitae; and contact information for two
references.

- Met Office seeks Polar Scientist
Hadley Centre Climate Programme
Exeter, United Kingdom
The Met Office, the United Kingdom's National Weather Service, seeks
candidates for a polar scientist to research climate change and
variability in polar regions as part of the Hadley Centre Climate
Programme. The position is permanent, full-time, and based in Exeter,
United Kingdom.
The successful candidate will contribute to development of land ice
and/or sea ice models; analyze model output and use observations to
understand climate change and variability in the polar regions leading
to peer-reviewed papers; work as part of the polar climate team in
meeting goals such as briefings to government departments; interact with
the external community to support the goals of the Met Office.
The successful candidate will have earned a PhD degree in mathematics or
physics related subject or equivalent experience; demonstrated
experience in climate model development, which has led to successful
outcomes; demonstrated ability to analyze climate model output, produce
high quality results and follow through to peer-reviewed papers; strong
written and oral communication; and experience in Fortran, UNIX or other
programming languages
Application deadline: Tuesday, 16 October 2012.
