IASC Working Group Meetings
Arctic Science Summit Week 2013
13-19 April 2013

The five Working Groups (WGs) of the International Arctic Science
Committee (IASC) will meet in conjunction with the Arctic Science Summit
Week (ASSW) 2013 in Krakow, Poland on 13-19 April 2013. The full
schedule for the ASSW 2013, including specifics on the WG meetings, is
available at: http://www.assw2013.us.edu.pl/?p=program.

The WGs (Marine, Terrestrial, Atmosphere, Cryosphere, and Human and
Social) are the main tool by which IASC performs its activities. WGs
identify and formulate science plans, research priorities, encourage
science-led programs, promote future generations of arctic scientists,
and act as scientific advisory boards to the IASC Council. All WG
meetings are open to the public and anyone interested in the meetings
can attend as observer. Scientists are invited to submit ideas for
international collaborative activities for consideration by the WGs to
IASC by 15 March 2013. To submit an idea, please send an email including
your name and contact information to: iasc [at] iasc.info. You need not be
present at the WG meeting in order for your suggestions to be
considered.

IASC is a nongovernmental, international scientific organization. The
IASC mission is to encourage and facilitate cooperation in all aspects
of arctic research, in all countries engaged in arctic research and in
all areas of the arctic region. Overall, IASC promotes and supports
leading-edge multi-disciplinary research in order to foster a greater
scientific understanding of the arctic region and its role in the Earth
system.

Deadline Extended: Call for Abstracts
45th International Liege Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics

The deadline for abstract submission to the 45th International Liege
Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics has been extended to Friday, 1 February
2013. The colloquium will be held 13-17 May 2013 in Liege, Belgium.

Oceanic primary production is a key component of the marine carbon,
oxygen, and nutrient cycles as well as the base of the marine food web.
Over the past two decades substantial efforts were deployed to evaluate
oceanic primary production. These efforts include in situ measurements
of uptake rates using isotopic trace techniques, satellite remote
sensing, autonomous instrumentation for bio-optics, carbon or oxygen
measurements, and the development of semi-empirical to complex
biogeochemical models. The 2013 Liege Colloquium will investigate new
insights related to the evaluation of primary production and the study
of the dynamics between physical forcing and ocean productivity
responses at various physical and temporal scales. Particular attention
will be focused on the variability at the synoptic to seasonal scales
and how it complicates our ability to sample primary production and
derive large-scale, climate-driven primary production budgets.

Abstracts covering all aspects of oceanic primary production are
welcome. There are approximately 40 travel grants available for young
scientists. To apply for travel assistance, abstract submission should
be accompanied with a letter of request sent to Charlotte Peelen
(oceanphys [at] ulg.ac.be).

Polar Climate Working Group Meeting
Community Earth System Model
11-13 February 2013

A Community Earth System Model (CESM) Polar Climate Working Group (PCWG)
Meeting will be held Monday-Wednesday, 11-13 February 2013 in Boulder,
Colorado at the National Center for Atmospheric Research Mesa
Laboratory.

Monday and Tuesday, the PCWG will meet on its own. The co-chairs
encourage discussion of issues including the sea ice model component
(CICE) development, community projects such as the CESM large ensemble
and high resolution runs, and anything else the community would like to
discuss. On Wednesday, the PCWG will meet jointly with the atmosphere,
chemistry, and whole atmosphere working groups.

Workshops and meetings of the PCWG are open to all who are interested in
polar processes. Anyone interested in attending the meetings should

Call for Abstracts
Ice, Clouds, and Climate Symposium
Davos Atmosphere and Cryosphere Assembly 2013
8-12 July 2013

Organizers of an Ice, Clouds, and Climate Symposium scheduled as part of
the Davos Atmosphere and Cryosphere Assembly 2013 announce a call for
abstracts. The assembly will be held scheduled for 8-12 July 2013 in
Davos, Switzerland.

Ice particles and ice nuclei play an important role in the microphysics
of clouds from the equator to the poles. Unfortunately, knowledge of ice
formation and ice nuclei is poor in all geographic areas. This symposium
will look at ice formation and precipitation in general as well as
looking at polar regions in particular where in-situ measurements are
rare and ice and cloud condensation nuclei numbers are often extremely
low. The specific sessions scheduled for the symposium are:

- Dynamics and Impact of Ice Formation in Clouds
- Quantifying Solid Precipitation: Measuring and Modelling
Challenges
- Clouds, Aerosols, and Precipitation at High Latitudes
