Event organizers at The Economist (http://www.economist.com) announce an
Arctic Summit entitled "A New Vista for Trade, Energy, and the
Environment." The event will be held 12 March 2013 in Oslo, Norway.

The resource-rich Arctic is changing faster than anywhere on Earth, and
its biggest transformation is just ahead. Due to climate change, the
polar ice cap is shrinking and floating summer ice is projected to
disappear altogether, setting alarm bells ringing for environmentalists,
but opening up new perspectives for trade and development.

The Arctic Summit will discuss major issues concerning the region,
including the chase for natural resources, the impact of climate change,
the emergence of new trading routes, and the need for responsible
governance. Speakers include:

    Arctic Energy Summit
    8-10 October 2013

Organizers of the 2013 Arctic Energy Summit announce that a call for
papers is now open. The meeting will be convened 8-10 October 2013 in
Akureyri, Iceland.

The Summit will be an interdisciplinary forum for scholars, energy
industry officials, scientists, academics, policymakers, energy
professionals, and community leaders who share an interest in, and
concern for, sustainable development of the Arctic and its energy
resources. Building on the work done at the highly successful 2007
Arctic Energy Summit and Technology Conference, the 2013 Summit will
address energy extraction, production, and transmission in the Arctic as
it relates to three thematic areas: richness, resilience, and
responsibility.

Abstracts for paper presentations, session proposals, workshop proposals
and poster sessions should be submitted by April 15th, 2013.

    Conference on Indigenous Sacred Sites in the Arctic
    11-13 September 2013

The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland is organizing an
international conference on the issue of indigenous sacred sites in the
Arctic. Entitled "Protecting the Sacred: Recognition of Sacred Sites of
Indigenous Peoples for Sustaining Nature and Culture in Northern and
Arctic Regions," the conference will be held 11-13 September 2013 in
Rovaniemi and Pyhatunturi, Finland.

The event will gather sacred sites custodians, scientists, indigenous
people's organizations, policymakers, and others to discuss how to
better recognize, legally protect, conserve, and manage Sacred Natural
Sites (SNS) of indigenous peoples in northern and arctic regions. The
primary goals of the conference are to provide recommendations for
policy-making related to SNS in the Arctic, and start a participatory
educational research project to advance the transmission of spiritually
relevant culturally embedded knowledge and practices related to sacred
sites to younger generations. Organizers also intend to produce a
publication on the protection of the SNS in northern and arctic regions.

Abstracts relevant to the conference topics are welcomed.

    4th Polar Shipping Summit
    12-13 March 2013
    Montreal, Canada

Organizers announce the 4th Polar Shipping Summit, which will look at
the current operational challenges faced by arctic shipping companies.
It will be convened in Montreal, Canada on 12-13 March 2013.

The conference will create a platform for international interaction in
the polar circles, uniting arctic shipping experts from Canada, Russia,
Europe, and the United States. Target audience members include ship
managers, owners, and builders; marine superintendents of mining, oil,
gas companies; project managers; naval architects; marine engineer;
marine equipment manufacturers; ice management specialists; and ice
forecasters and meteorologists. Presentations will discuss and analyze
the latest policy, operational, and technical developments in the
industry.

  1. REMINDER: Call for Abstracts
    Climate Change in Northern Territories
    22-23 August 2013
    Akureyri, Iceland

Organizers of the conference entitled, "Climate Change in Northern
Territories: Sharing Experiences, Exploring New Method,s and Assessing
Socio-Economic Impacts," announce the third call for abstracts for general
participation and young researchers. The conference, organized by the
European Observation Network (ESPON)/Evidence in a North European
Context (ENECON) in cooperation with the Northern Research Forum (NFR),
will convene 22-23 August 2013 in Akureyri, Iceland.

The ENECON project addresses challenges and opportunities facing
territorial development and spatial planning policies, and practices,
particular to the vast territory of the very northern part of Europe.
The goal of the conference is to turn attention to territorial
challenges and the need for future research in the northernmost regions
of Europe and the Arctic; and the challenge of translating scientific
knowledge into action. The conference aims to bring together researchers
who have similar backgrounds but focus on different problems and
different methodological approaches. Regional and local stakeholders as
well as state politicians and policymakers are also target groups for
the conference.

Subthemes of the conference include:

- Territorial socio-economic impacts of climate change,
- Methodologies for assessing socio-economic impact, and
- Adaptation to climate change in regions and local
communities--examining methods and sharing knowledge.

Abstract submission deadline: Thursday, 28 February 2013.
Abstract submission deadline for young researchers: 15 March 2013.
