  1. Conference Announcement
    Arctic Summit
    12 March 2013
    Oslo, Norway

Event organizers at The Economist (http://www.economist.com) announce an
Arctic Summit entitled "A New Vista for Trade, Energy, and the
Environment." The event will be held 12 March 2013 in Oslo, Norway.

The resource-rich Arctic is changing faster than anywhere on Earth, and
its biggest transformation is just ahead. Due to climate change, the
polar ice cap is shrinking and floating summer ice is projected to
disappear altogether, setting alarm bells ringing for environmentalists,
but opening up new perspectives for trade and development.

The Arctic Summit will discuss major issues concerning the region,
including the chase for natural resources, the impact of climate change,
the emergence of new trading routes, and the need for responsible
governance. Speakers include:

- Espen Barth Eide, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Norway
- Anton Vasiliev, Ambassador at Large, Arctic Cooperation, Russian
Federation
- Gustav Lind, Chair, Arctic Council
- Tom Paddon, President and Chief Executive Officer, Baffinland Iron
Mines Corporation
- Dominic Ziegler, Asia Editor, The Economist
- Rajendra Pachauri, Chair, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change
- Huigen Yang, Director, Polar Research Institute of China
- Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Director, Potsdam Institute for Climate
Impact Research

Special registration rates are available for NGOs, academics, and
students. There will also be a reception and dinner held Monday, 11
March 2013 for an additional fee.

  1. Call for Papers
    Arctic Energy Summit
    8-10 October 2013
    Akureyri, Iceland

Organizers of the 2013 Arctic Energy Summit announce that a call for
papers is now open. The meeting will be convened 8-10 October 2013 in
Akureyri, Iceland.

The Summit will be an interdisciplinary forum for scholars, energy
industry officials, scientists, academics, policymakers, energy
professionals, and community leaders who share an interest in, and
concern for, sustainable development of the Arctic and its energy
resources. Building on the work done at the highly successful 2007
Arctic Energy Summit and Technology Conference, the 2013 Summit will
address energy extraction, production, and transmission in the Arctic as
it relates to three thematic areas: richness, resilience, and
responsibility.

Abstracts for paper presentations, session proposals, workshop proposals
and poster sessions should be submitted by April 15th, 2013.

Further information on submissions is available at:

  1. Call for Abstracts
Conference on Indigenous Sacred Sites in the Arctic
    11-13 September 2013
    Rovaniemi and Pyhatunturi, Finland

The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland is organizing an
international conference on the issue of indigenous sacred sites in the
Arctic. Entitled "Protecting the Sacred: Recognition of Sacred Sites of
Indigenous Peoples for Sustaining Nature and Culture in Northern and
Arctic Regions," the conference will be held 11-13 September 2013 in
Rovaniemi and Pyhatunturi, Finland.

The event will gather sacred sites custodians, scientists, indigenous
people's organizations, policymakers, and others to discuss how to
better recognize, legally protect, conserve, and manage Sacred Natural
Sites (SNS) of indigenous peoples in northern and arctic regions. The
primary goals of the conference are to provide recommendations for
policy-making related to SNS in the Arctic, and start a participatory
educational research project to advance the transmission of spiritually
relevant culturally embedded knowledge and practices related to sacred
sites to younger generations. Organizers also intend to produce a
publication on the protection of the SNS in northern and arctic regions.

Abstracts relevant to the conference topics are welcomed.

Abstract deadline: Thursday, 28 February 2013.
