  1. Call for Papers
    Remote Regions/Northern Development Sessions
53rd Annual Meeting of the Western Regional Science Association
    16-19 February 2014
    San Diego, California

Organizers of the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Western Regional Science
Association (WRSA) announce a call for papers for the Remote
Regions/Northern Development Sessions. The conference will convene 16-19
February 2014 in San Diego, California.

The WRSA Remote Regions/ Northern Development sessions, now in its
thirty-second year, call is for papers on topics including the analysis
and discussion of economic, political, and social-cultural change in
remote and sparsely settled regions. Examples of specific topics include
the consequences of new technology, the effects of government
expenditures, the conditions for success or failure of development
projects, relations between the subsistence and market economies,
regional benefits and costs of development, economic integration and
cultural preservation, community development, changing social patterns,
Native sovereignty and federalism, migration, and institutional change
and resource governance in remote regions. Papers on any topic
consistent with the general theme are welcomed.

Proposals for special sessions, especially sessions that address a
particular theme from the perspective of a number of countries or
regions, are welcome. Those interested in organizing such sessions
should contact Greg Protasel (GP [at] uaa.alaska.edu).

To submit a paper, please email a copy to Greg Protasel
(GP [at] uaa.alaska.edu).

Submission deadline: Friday, 1 November 2013.

Further information about association membership, registration, hotel
reservations, and related matters will be sent to those responding to
this call.

  1. Session Announcement and Call for Abstracts
    Ocean Sciences Meeting
    23-28 February 2014
    Honolulu, Hawaii

Organizers of the 2014 Ocean Sciences Meeting are currently accepting
registration and abstract submissions. The meetings will convene 23-28
February 2014 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Conveners of Session 102, entitled
"The Chukchi Sea Region: Physical Forcing and Ecosystem Response in the
Pacific Arctic" invite abstracts from the community.

Over the last decade, the Chukchi Sea has warmed, freshened, and
experienced major reductions in seasonal ice cover. These changes
reflect the sea's vulnerability to climate perturbations, its
interconnectivity via the Pacific inflow through Bering Strait, and the
influence of processes at the continental slope and in canyons including
upwelling and eddy formation. Numerous national and international
scientific programs are underway and sponsored by Pacific sector
countries including Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the United
States along with private industry. These programs are rapidly
increasing our sampling capability of the Arctic's Pacific gateway and
promise improved system-level understanding of the Chukchi Sea.

Conveners of Session 102 invite contributions on emerging results from
field and modeling studies that illuminate key ocean-atmosphere
interactions including sea ice dynamics, physical and biogeochemical
processes, and biological responses throughout the food web.
Contributions on changes to external forcing that may promote marine
species shifts or evidence of major ecosystem reorganizations,
especially with regard to downstream forcing from the northern Bering
Sea, are also welcome.

This multidisciplinary and international session will highlight the
environmental status and trends of the Arctic's Pacific sector, with a
focus on the connectivity among physical forcing, biogeochemical
cycling, biological response, ecosystem modeling and social-economic
interactions.

Abstract submission deadline: Friday, 4 October 2013.
