The IARPC Glacier-Fjord Implementation Team will host an open meeting
during the AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, California. It will be
held in Pacific Room J of the San Francisco Marriott Marquis from
6:00-9:00 p.m. PST on Tuesday, 10 December 2013
(http://www.arcus.org/communitymeetings/agu/2013/schedule/one).
In its recent five-year plan, the U.S. Interagency Arctic Research
Policy Committee (IARPC) identified Glacier-Fjord interaction processes
and their consequences as an area that would benefit from coordinated
support by multiple agencies. An implementation team has been meeting to
assess the state of federal investment in such studies, the most
pressing needs for additional investment, and mechanisms to move the
community forward. Following the release of the CLIVAR document
"Understanding the Dynamic Response of Greenland's Marine Terminating
Glaciers to Oceanic and Atmospheric Forcing"
GreenlandIceOcean_WhitePaper.pdf), a workshop was held in June 2013 to
engage the international community in discussions of the present state
of knowledge of the relevant processes and how to move that
understanding forward. The report from that workshop will be distributed
by the time of the Fall AGU meeting. The goal of the upcoming team
meeting at AGU is to continue the discussion between funding agencies
and scientists on future investments in glacier-fjord interactions. Dr.
Robert Bindschadler will moderate the meeting.
