  1. Postdoctoral Fellowship
    Interdisciplinary Arctic Research
AINA at the University of Calgary
    Calgary, Canada

The Arctic Institute of North American (AINA) at the University of
Calgary seeks application for a postdoctoral fellowship in the
development of an interdisciplinary Arctic research-, data-, and
information-sharing platform. The duration of the position is 12 months
starting 1 May 2014. It is based in Calgary, Canada.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team engaged in
the design and implementation of Arctic Connect, which is a
Network-Enabled Platform (NEP), to support geospatial referencing of
information about the Arctic system and accessing metadata, primary
data, and other information sets derived from research, education, and
private sector activities in the Arctic and subarctic. This includes
information sets derived from the AINA historical and cultural archives;
from the AINA research station at Kluane Lake, Yukon; from a network of
research partners around the Arctic; and from community-based and other
environmental monitoring efforts in the Canadian north.

The focus of the fellowship will be research and partnership engagement
to ensure that Arctic Connect is developed appropriately and with
user-group desired outcomes as the guiding design principle. It will
also include creating innovative training materials to minimize possible
barriers to the full use of the Arctic Connect NEP and complimentary
educational and outreach tools. These materials can include video
tutorials, interactive demos, user stories, demo galleries, and similar
products.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD no later than 1 May 2014. The
field of expertise is open but preference will be given to individuals
with northern research experience in the science or social science
disciplines and a background in communications or a related field.
Understanding of, or experience with, community-based environmental
monitoring and citizen science is an asset.

Application deadline: Friday, 14 March 2014.

Applications; including a letter outlining research experience (five
pages maximum), academic and professional qualifications, a curriculum
vitae, and contact information for three references; should be submitted
via email to Maribeth S. Murray (murraym [at] ucalgary.ca).

  1. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
Sunlight Absorption on the Greenland Ice Sheet
    Dartmouth College and CRREL
    Hanover, New Hampshire

The Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College and the U.S. Army
Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) seek
applications for a postdoctoral research fellowship in an
interdisciplinary project, entitled "Sunlight Absorption on the
Greenland ice sheet Experiment" (SAGE). The duration of the position is
18 months with possible extension. The preferred start is June 2014 with
flexibility for starting between May and August 2014. The position is
based in Hanover, New Hampshire.

The SAGE fellowship position will operate as part of a large
interdisciplinary project with team members at seven institutions
seeking to quantitatively trace black carbon from its sources to
deposition and albedo impacts on the Greenland ice sheet. The project
will involve remote sensing observations of biomass burning emission
events (e.g., using MODIS), forward and backward plume transport
modeling, space-based remote sensing of aerosol/smoke plumes (e.g.,
using CALIPSO, MISR, MODIS), deposition modeling, and a significant
field campaign sampling snow on the Greenland ice sheet to track black
carbon at every stage of the emission, transport, deposition, and albedo
impact cycle.

The successful candidate will contribute to the program activities and
strategic goals principally by processing CALIPSO remote sensing data to
quantify smoke plume presence and density, processing samples returned
from the field campaign, and leading synthesis of observational and
modeling products from the multiple team members. It is expected that
the successful candidate will lead two papers on the research.

The successful candidate must have completed a doctoral degree prior to
the start date. Candidates who have qualified at the doctoral level
within five years of the application deadline will receive primary
consideration.

Review of applications begins: Tuesday, 25 March 2014.

The position is open until filled.

Applications including a short statement of interest, list of
publications in peer-reviewed journals, an academic curriculum vitae,
and contact information for three references should be sent to Chris
Polashenski (chris.polashenski [at] gmail.com) or Zoe Courville
(zcourville [at] gmail.com).

  1. SCAR and COMNAP Antarctic Science Fellowships 2014
    CCAMLR Scientific Scholarships 2014

Three leading Antarctic organizations announce opportunities for early
career researchers. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research
(SCAR), the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programmes
(COMNAP) and the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine
Living Resources (CCAMLR) are working together to attract early career
researchers, scientists, engineers and other professionals to strengthen
international capacity and cooperation in fields such as climate,
biodiversity, conservation, humanities, and astrophysics research.

SCAR and COMNAP announce five fellowship opportunities in 2014. The
fellowships enable early career researchers to join a project team from
another country, which may open up new opportunities and create research
partnerships lasting many years and over many Antarctic research seasons.

In conjunction with the SCAR and COMNAP opportunities, CCAMLR will award
up to three scholarships in 2014. The scholarships are intended to
assist early career scientists to participate in the work of the CCAMLR
Scientific Committee and its working groups over a period of two years.
The objective of this offering is to build capacity within the CCAMLR
scientific community to help generate and sustain the scientific
expertise needed to support the work of CCAMLR in the long-term.

SCAR and COMNAP fellowships application deadline: 4 June 2014.

CCAMLR scholarships application deadline: 1 October 2014.

  1. NSF-Funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates
Hyperspectral Remote Sensing of Arctic Environments
    19 May-11 July 2014
    University of Northern Iowa
    Cedar Falls, Iowa

The Geography Department at the University of Northern Iowa announces a
call for applications to the NSF-Funded Undergraduate Summer Research
Internship (REU) program in hyperspectral remote sensing of Arctic
environments. The program will be held 19 May-11 July 2014 in Cedar
Falls, Iowa.

The purpose of this program is to introduce young scientists to a highly
interdisciplinary research environment with fundamental and applied
research in hyperspectral imaging (HI). HI is widely used in various
disciplines such as earth science, environmental science, biology,
forestry, physics, chemistry, computer science, and geographic
information science. One of this year's emphases is hyperspectral remote
sensing of Arctic landscapes including ice, snow, and tundra vegetation.

Interns will be selected by a committee using the following criteria:
relevant experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) areas; academic record and achievement; how the project will fit
the academic plan of the student; demonstrated research experience and
motivation; two letters of reference; and compatibility of student and
mentor areas of interest.

Application deadline: Friday, 28 March 2014.
