The Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS), Faculty of Environment,
Earth, and Resources, at the University of Manitoba seek candidates for
one postdoctoral fellowship and one full-time research associate. Both
positions will focus on the geophysics and remote sensing of sea ice
thermodynamic and dynamic processes. The positions are based in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

CEOS has a number of Arctic research facilities and associated
infrastructure for sea ice, meteorological, and oceanographic
measurements; ocean and atmospheric observations; supercomputing; remote
sensing; and field programs in Arctic Canada, Greenland, and northern
Europe.

CEOS seeks candidates who have backgrounds in sea ice geophysics,
atmospheric science, physical oceanography, climatology, physical
geography, or related fields. The successful candidates will have a
proven publication track record and completion of a PhD. In exceptional
circumstances a Master's level degree may be considered. The positions
are open to international applicants.

  1. PhD Research Fellowship

The Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo (UiO) seeks
candidates for a PhD research fellowship in hydrology and cryospheric
sciences. The position is for four years with a starting date as soon as
possible and no later then 1 October 2014. It is based in Oslo, Norway.

The successful candidate will work within the physical geography and
hydrology section of the department on a long-term project focusing on
the development of new advanced technologies for Earth observation from
both satellites and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS.) Regional studies
will focus on characterization of snowpacks at the catchment scale in
southern Norway and Svalbard. The project entails collaborative research
between UiO, the Northern Research Institute (Norut) and Statkraft.

One quarter of the student's work will include teaching responsibilities
in the department. The student will be expected to travel to Svalbard
and northern Norway for short-term visits and field-work. In addition to
field deployments with the UAS, the candidate will be expected to work
with state-of-the-art hydrologic and snow modeling tools using linux on
the ABEL supercomputing cluster at UiO. The ideal candidate will have
experience with Python and/or C++ and knowledge of large data analysis
and visualization tools. Those with a particular interest in the
development of embedded devices such as rasberry-Pi and otherwise are
particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in hydrology,
meteorology, or related with documented knowledge on hydrology. The
fellowship requires admission to the research-training program at the
UiO Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

    Ecotoxicology

The Department of Biosciences at the University of Oslo (UiO) seeks
candidates for a PhD research fellowship in ecotoxicology. The
fellowship is for a period of up to four years with a starting date no
later than 1 October 2014 and is based in Oslo, Norway.

The successful candidate will work on a project to investigate how
differences in life history strategies affect food web bioaccumulation
of environmental contaminants. This objective is a part of a larger
goal; to predict responses in food web flow of bio-accumulating
contaminants following expected climate change driven alterations in
Arctic marine ecosystems. The project combines knowledge from
ecotoxicology, marine biology, and evolutionary ecology. The successful
candidate will compile and work with large data sets, using both
statistical and mechanistic modeling. Field studies or experiments may
be conducted to complement the existing data. One quarter of the
student's work will include teaching responsibilities in the department.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in biology or a
related discipline and have strong quantitative skills and interests,
and will be required to perform statistical and mechanistic modeling.
Prior experience with data treatment and statistics, life history
theory, and/or contaminant bioaccumulation is relevant. The fellowship
requires admission to the research-training program at the UiO Faculty
of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

  1. PhD Student Position
    Numerical Modeling in Ice Mechanics

The Department of Applied Mechanics at the Aalto University School of
Engineering seeks applicants for a PhD student position in numerical
modeling in ice mechanics. The expected duration of studies is four
years. The position is initially funded for one year with extended
funding subject to review of academic progress. The position is based in
Aalto, Finland.

The position is within in the research group on Arctic marine and ice
technology within the Department of Applied Mechanics. The research
group studies ice mechanics, the behavior of ships and structures in
ice, and the impact of sea ice on the safety of maritime transportation.
The successful applicant will work on the numerical simulation of the
failure of a sea ice against offshore structures using and expanding on
the Finite-Discrete Element Method (FEM-DEM) developed by the
Department. The goal of the work is to model the fragmentation of an ice
sheet into discrete blocks, the pile-up process of these blocks into
rubble, and the further effect of this rubble on the ice sheet failure
process.

The successful applicant must fulfill the requirements for PhD students
at the Aalto University; will have a Master's degree in mechanical
engineering, marine engineering, civil engineering, engineering physics,
mechanics or related disciplines; and good knowledge in solid mechanics
and numerical modeling.
