  1. PhD Student Positions
Carbon Cycling in Arctic Coastal Marine Environments
    University of Manitoba
    Winnipeg, Canada

The Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) and faculty of
Environment, Earth, and Resources, at the University of Manitoba seek
PhD students to study vertical carbon dioxide exchanges within Arctic
sea ice and ocean environments using field and remote sensing
techniques. The positions are available to start in May or September
2014 and are based at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada.

The goal of this CEOS project is to better define vertical transport of
carbon across atmosphere-ocean and atmosphere-ice-ocean interfaces as
part of regional Arctic marine carbon budgets. Students will build on
multidisciplinary carbon cycle work conducted within the Canadian and
Greenlandic Arctic.

The ideal applicants will have strong quantitative and technical skills,
and degrees in a relevant field such as micro-meteorology or
climatology, oceanography, environmental science, and physical
geography. A background in instrumentation and field research is an
asset. The positions are open to international applicants.

The positions are open until filled.

Applicants should send a short letter of intent and a curriculum vitae
to Tim Papakyriakou (Tim.Papakyriakou [at] umanitoba.ca).

  1. PhD Student and Postdoctoral Positions
    Arctic Sea Ice
    University of East Anglia
    Norwich, United Kingdom

The Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS) at the University
of East Anglia School of Environmental Sciences seeks applicants for a
PhD student and a postdoctoral research position. These positions are
part of a five-year research project on Arctic Sea Ice. The PhD position
is for three and one half years and the postdoctoral position is for two
and one half years. Both positions are based in Norwich, United Kingdom.

The goal of the research project is to improve the understanding of the
links between the Arctic atmosphere, sea ice, and the ocean and to
investigate the biogeochemical processes in the sea ice under various
sea ice states. A new state-of the-art sea ice chamber will be
constructed and operated and a hierarchy of numerical models employed to
support this research.

Successful applicants will be highly motivated individuals with an
interest in the technical challenge of chamber work and the scientific
challenge of understanding fundamental sea ice properties and the
relevance for the atmosphere

Application deadline for the PhD position: 31 May 2014.
