PhD Position
Holocene Archaeology of Northeast Asia

The Arctic Centre at the University of Groningen seeks candidates for a
PhD position in an international project investigating the Holocene
hunter-gatherer archeology of Northeast (NE) Asia. The position, which
will be funded for four years depending on progress assessment of
year-one, will be based for two years at the Arctic Centre at the
University of Groningen in the Netherlands and two years at the
University of Alberta in Canada, and/or at a suitable partner research
institution in NE Asia and/or on related field-based or collections work.

Support for this new PhD project is derived jointly from Dutch and
Canadian sources, and is part of international collaborative efforts
such as the Baikal Hokkaido Research Project (BHAP). The successful
applicant will derive supervision, training, and access to collections,
analytical equipment, and excavations through BHAP's academic networks
that now span Europe, Russia, Japan, Canada, and the U.S.

At this stage in the application process, the scope of the new PhD
project remains broad; both in terms of research question and in terms
of precise thematic, temporal, and geographic coverage. Suitable topics
include, but are not limited to, the emergence of maritime adaptations
in NE Asia, the rise of prehistoric hunter-gatherer exchange networks in
NE Asia, innovations in prehistoric food technologies, mid-Holocene
climate change and cultural response, the archaeology of maritime
forager-traders in NE Asia (Okhotsk Culture), Ainu ethnogenesis (and/or
other indigenous groups in the Russian Far East), and ethnoarchaeology
of Northern Eurasia.

Applicants are expected to provide a detailed research plan of their
intended project as part of the application process. The successful
candidate will be chosen on the basis of their previous academic
performance (40%), but also in relation to the originality, feasibility
and overall quality of this PhD research proposal (60%).

Senior/Staff Engineer/Technician

The department of Arctic Geophysics at the University Centre in Svalbard
(UNIS) seeks candidates for the position of senior/staff
engineer/technician in meteorology and oceanography. The position is
full-time and permanent and located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway.

The successful candidate will hold a Master's or Bachelor's degree in
meteorology, oceanography, or equivalent. Experience in higher education
within geophysics or a related discipline is preferred since this
position will be linked to the UNIS education program and courses, and
will be an important staff member during fieldwork and lab work.
Electronic skills are also preferred in order to support the work of the
Air-Cryosphere-Sea Interaction group at UNIS.

The position's main objective is to operate, maintain, and systemize
scientific instruments in meteorology and oceanography at the department
of Arctic Geophysics, take part in fieldwork planning, and carryout
fieldwork and expeditions in connection with the department courses and
research projects.

Lead Ecologist
Alaska Conservation Team

The Wilderness Society (TWS), a national non-profit organization, seeks
candidates for the position of lead ecologist on its Alaska Conservation
Team. The position is full-time and based in Anchorage, Alaska.

The mission of TWS is to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to
care for their wild places. Reporting to the Senior Science Director,
the lead ecologist is an integral member of the Alaska Conservation Team
and leads the Alaska Ecology Team, which includes a watershed ecologist
and a wildlife ecologist. This position will be responsible for working
with the team to identify and conduct priority ecological research and
review environmental impact assessments necessary to advance
conservation campaign outcomes for Alaska's Arctic. The lead ecologist
regularly collaborates with other TWS scientists outside of Alaska. Work
is done in collaboration with federal, state, tribal, non-governmental
organizations, and university scientists and managers. It requires close
coordination with Alaska's State Director and TWS' interdisciplinary
Alaska team, which is comprised of policy and communications experts.

The successful candidate will have a PhD and two or more years of
experience in an applied scientific field of work such as conservation
biology, terrestrial ecology, landscape ecology or wildlife ecology;
demonstrate proficiency with spatial analytical techniques that can help
identify conservation priorities and guide energy development; and
demonstrate desire and proficiency to prepare reports, white papers and
manuscripts for peer-review in a timely manner and to make presentations
in front of public and professional audiences.
