The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a
member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and
state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety
of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology and geophysics
thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals. AWI has
three openings for postdoctoral researchers.
POSITION 1:
Postdoctoral Researcher in Physical Oceanography
Division: Biosciences
Application Deadline: 21 September 2014
The department of Physical Oceanography of Polar Seas and the department
of Deep-Sea Ecology and Technology jointly invite applications for a
postdoctoral researcher in Physical Oceanography in the framework of the
Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF) strategic
investment "FRontiers in Arctic marine Monitoring: The FRAM Ocean
Observing System". The position will address the integration of sensors
into an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), and the subsequent
AUV-based collection of data for the study of coupled
physical-biogeochemical processes in the Arctic. The position shall be
filled by 1 October 2014.
Background:
The strategic investment FRAM aims at maintaining year-around
measurements in the Arctic and the Greenland Sea for the study of
long-term changes in both the ocean circulation and the marine
ecosystem. In order to explore ice-covered areas of the polar seas with
minimum perturbation, AWI has operated an AUV in recent years. Without
being physically connected to a support vessel, this unmanned robot is
able to navigate autonomously and conduct oceanographic measurements
along a maximum distance of 60 kilometers. So far, the AUV missions have
focused on the investigation of biochemical processes in the Arctic
marginal ice zone. Within the strategic investment FRAM, the vehicle's
range of tasks shall be extended to allow investigations of the
interaction between physical and biochemical processes in the Arctic. In
this framework we are seeking to appoint a physical oceanographer to
join our already existing AUV-team.
Tasks:
In close cooperation with the AUV-team your initial responsibility will
be the integration of physical sensors (turbulence probe, acoustic
current profiler) into the AUV including sea trials, and their
maintenance during research expeditions. Subsequently, the processing
and validation of the AUV-based measurements will be one of your major
tasks within FRAM, in order to provide robust data sets to the FRAM
community. These data shall then enable you and your colleagues in an
interdisciplinary approach to investigate the impacts of both sea ice
and ocean currents on the changing Arctic ecosystem.
Requirements:
You are required to have completed both a university degree in physical
oceanography, physics, or meteorology and a topically-relevant PhD. You
are expected to be able to demonstrate knowledge in operating scientific
measurement systems, and have a solid background in both scientific
programming (MATLAB) and in handling large data sets. Experience in
conducting and analyzing measurements of ocean currents and ocean
turbulence are desired. Very good English language skills (both spoken
and written) are expected, as is your willingness to take part in
scientific expeditions aboard research vessels. It will be of particular
importance that you are able to work self-motivated as part of a team of
scientists, engineers and technicians. We expect from you a deep
interest in learning and subsequently applying a wide range of skills
from both scientific and technical disciplines. Experience in working
with ArcGIS is preferred.
The position is limited to 3 years and may be extended, depending on
performance and availability of funding. The salary will be paid in
accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des offentlichen Dienstes TVoD
Bund. The hiring is subject to the budget approval. The place of
employment will be Bremerhaven.

POSITION 2:
Postdoctoral Researcher in Physical Oceanography
Division: Climate Sciences
Application Deadline: 21 September 2014
The section Physical Oceanography of the Polar Seas invites applications
for a postdoctoral researcher in Physical Oceanography, in the framework
of the HGF infrastructure Program: "FRontiers in Arctic marine
Monitoring: The FRAM Ocean Observing System". The position will address
the management and integration of data from this and related programs.
Background:
The FRAM ocean observing system is a marine infrastructure to enable
year-round time series observations in the Arctic Ocean and the Nordic
Seas. FRAM contributes to international efforts towards comprehensive
global Earth observations. The main purpose of the FRAM infrastructure
is permanent presence at sea, covering the ocean from the sea surface to
the sea floor, for the provision of near real-time data for the study of
ocean dynamics, climate variability and ecosystem change. The
infrastructure will provide ocean data from a range of measurements
platforms and sensors that will be made available to a multitude of
users.
Tasks:
The Task of the position is to integrate and make the data from the
various FRAM platforms accessible to a wide community. These will
include time series, regional distributions and repeat sections of
physical and biogeochemical parameters, which need to be combined with
available data sets from related international programs. The candidate
shall interact with potential users of the data ranging from physical
oceanographers to modelers and marine biologists.
Requirements:
We seek a person holding a PhD degree in physical oceanography or
related fields. A solid background in fluid dynamics and extensive
experience with analysis of data from various sources are required,
experience in sea-going work is desirable. The candidate must be open to
interact with an interdisciplinary science community and should be
willing to participate in research expeditions.
The position is limited to 3 years. The salary will be paid in
accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des offentlichen Dienstes TVoD
Bund. The hiring is subject to the budget approval. The place of
employment will be Bremerhaven.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Arctic Upper Ocean and Sea-Ice Processes
Division: Climate Sciences
Application Deadline: 14 September 2014
The department of Physical Oceanography of the Polar Seas within the
Climate Sciences division seeks to appoint a postdoctoral researcher in
Arctic upper ocean and sea-ice processes to work in an interdisciplinary
team of physical oceanographers, sea-ice physicists and biologists
within the framework of the HGF strategic investment FRontiers in Arctic
marine Monitoring (FRAM). Preferred starting date is 1 January 2015.
Background:
The Arctic is one of the regions where climate change is most
prominently observed. In the previous decades we see a continuous
retreat of sea ice cover during summer in connection with other changes
in the physical, biogeochemical and biological environment of the upper
Arctic Ocean and sea ice. The strategic investment FRAM of the HGF aims
to establish an infrastructure for year-round surface-to-seafloor ocean
observation including ecosystem functions in the Arctic Ocean and the
Nordic Seas. The infrastructure comprises stationary components
(moorings, benthic observatories), actively navigating platforms
(gliders, autonomous underwater vehicles, benthic crawlers) and drifting
elements (floats, ice-tethered platforms). Carried out by AWI, FRAM
maintains and extends long-term multidisciplinary observations in the
Arctic for studying climate and ecosystem change.
