- Naval Research Laboratory seeks Postdoctoral Associate
Physical Oceanography
Stennis Space Center, Mississippi
The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is seeking a postdoctoral associate
in physical oceanography to expand understanding of Arctic Ocean
dynamics important for increasing the forecast capabilities of the
Navy's state-of-the-art coupled ice-ocean and ice-ocean-atmosphere model
prediction systems.
The candidate will work with NRL researchers in developing new
techniques for the assimilation of snow and ice thickness data into the
Community Ice Code (CICE) and study Arctic processes with global and
relocatable ice-ocean-atmosphere coupled modeling systems. This
challenging work requires a broad understanding of physical oceanography
and Arctic processes. The selected applicant will work with NRL to study
the impact of reduced ice volume in the Arctic using satellite,
airborne, and in situ observations with our coupled models. Strong
programming skills, especially with MATLAB and FORTRAN, are required.
Familiarity with CICE, HYCOM and WaveWatch III models and data
assimilation would be beneficial.
This position is open until filled.

new research directions, support science staff in expanding grant
programs and strengthening scientific productivity, and develop and
implement science plans. The position also serves as the administrative
lead for the Center's science advisory committee (SAC); makes
recommendations to the CEO and President, Board of Directors, and SAC
regarding scientific direction; supervises personnel; and works with the
Education Director to integrate science and education programs.
Applicants must have a PhD in marine biology, zoology, wildlife biology
or a related research field. Fifteen years' professional research
experience in a related field is required (including project budgeting
and management), with ten years at a supervisory level or the equivalent.
Application review begins: 20 February 2015.
The position will be open until filled.

- University of Tasmania seeks Postdoctoral Researcher
Seasonal Sea Ice Forecasting
Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
The University of Tasmania seeks a postdoctoral researcher in seasonal
sea ice forecasting for a position related to the Antarctic Gateway
Partnership, a special research initiative funded by the Australian
Research Council. The position is full-time for a period of three years,
and will be based in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
This position will focus initially on the assessment of the initial
conditions and seasonal prediction of Southern Hemisphere sea ice and
its physical processes within the Bureau of Meteorologys seasonal
prediction model, POAMA (Predictive Ocean Atmosphere Model for
Australia). These results will be compared against results from similar
models used in other forecast centres and against observations. From
this, the incumbent is expected to be able to evaluate the potential
capability of a preliminary seasonal forecasting service based on POAMA.
This position will contribute to researching and improving our
understanding of the mechanisms and predictability of interannual
variations of Southern Ocean sea ice, and will help guide system
developments.
Application deadline: 23 February 2015.
