The Aalto University School of Engineering has an open tenure track or
tenured position in marine technology. The position will be based in
Espoo, Finland.
The position is located in the Department of Applied Mechanics in the
marine technology group, which conducts research related to ship design,
ship structures, ship systems engineering, stability and hydrodynamics
of ships and other marine structures, and safety of maritime transport
and winter navigation.
Aalto University is a new multidisciplinary science and art community in
the fields of science, economics, and art and design. The university's
cornerstones are its strengths in education and research, with 20,000
basic degree and graduate students, and a staff of 4,500 of which 300
are professors. The call for applications is cross disciplinary and
applicants in all fields of marine technology are invited to apply.

- Dartmouth College seeks Postdoctoral Scientist

The Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College seeks applicants
for a postdoctoral fellowship to work on understanding the
microstructural evolution (grain size and shape, texture) of
polycrystalline ice under creep conditions and relating this behavior to
the flow of ice sheets. The position is for 30 months, and will be based
in Hanover, New Hampshire.
The applicant should preferably have a PhD in either Materials Science
or Earth Sciences with experience in mechanical testing and
microstructural characterization techniques such as scanning electron
microscopy including electron backscatter diffraction. Experience with
microstructural characterization and/or mechanical testing of ice, while
not essential, is strongly preferred.

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta seeks
one or two students for MSc or PhD opportunities in Northern Fisheries
and Aquatic Sciences. The positions will be based in Edmonton, Alberta,
Canada.
The successful applicant(s) will join a five-year Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada Collaborative Research and
Development research program. The program will include BACI
(before/after, control/impact) assessment of a distinctive habitat
compensation project on headwater lakes and streams in the Lac de Gras
watershed; and will design and conduct research investigating the
influence of ecosystem connectivity on fish and/or invertebrates,
incorporating unique whole-system manipulations in pristine low-arctic
ecosystems. The program collaborates with freshwater ecologist Bill
Tonn, fisheries biologist Kimberly Howland, hydraulic engineer David
Zhu, and industry partner Diavik Diamond Mines.
Candidates should have a BSc or MSc in biology or a related discipline,
and must meet other requirements for admission to the graduate program
in Biological Sciences. Aquatic field experience and availability for
summer 2011 fieldwork is desirable.
