The University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks PhD candidates for the Marine
Ecosystem Sustainability in the Arctic and Subarctic (MESAS) program.
The program is based in Juneau and Fairbanks, Alaska.

MESAS is an interdisciplinary NSF-funded Integrative Graduate Education
and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program that incorporates social and
natural sciences to explore new approaches to studying and managing
marine ecosystems. The program uses case studies, courses, and seminars
to teach the fundamental principles and analytical tools of fisheries
science, oceanography, ecology, economics, management, marine policy,
and anthropology to broadly train students in ecosystem-based approaches
to living marine resources.

The MESAS program offers interdisciplinary marine ecosystem coursework,
and provides opportunities for an internship with a partner
organization, mentoring of undergraduate students, and interaction with
the terrestrial sustainability IGERT at UAF. Students may locate in
either Juneau or Fairbanks. Fellowships are available to U.S. citizens
or permanent residents seeking a PhD degree, and include a $30,000
annual stipend, tuition, health insurance, and research funding.

Application deadline: 31 January 2011 for Fall 2011 enrollment.
