Alaska Pacific University (APU) seeks a full-time faculty member
(Assistant/Associate Professor) in Marine Biology. The position will be
based in Anchorage, Alaska and begin January or August of 2011.

The preferred area of expertise is fisheries ecology or other area of
marine ecology. Candidates with a strong interest in providing research
experience for undergraduates are particularly encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach 24 credits (typically equivalent to 6 4-unit courses) over
the academic year in the Marine Biology major. This will include
Survey of Marine Biology, a section in one of the undergraduate
science requirements (e.g., Principles of Biology), a marine field
course, and one course related to candidate's area of expertise.
Opportunities are available to teach courses online and in the field
locally as well as in the classroom on campus.
- Hold regular office hours and advise Marine Biology students in
coordination with the Program Director. Opportunities to advise
Master of Science students in Environmental Science with marine
projects are also available.
- Participate in University service (e.g., committee assignments,
governance, graduation).

Qualifications:
- A PhD from a regionally accredited university is required,
although degree candidates who have advanced to candidacy are also
encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching.

Alaska Pacific University is a small private liberal arts university
with a mission of active learning both in and beyond the classroom. The
Marine Biology program is the fastest growing program on the campus. APU
also has a Master's of Science program in the Environmental Science
department that includes students working on marine-related thesis
topics.

  1. University of New Hampshire seeks Postdoctoral Scientist
    Modeling Arctic Stream Biogeochemistry
    Durham, New Hampshire

The University of New Hampshire seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral
scientist who will address research questions regarding arctic stream
biogeochemical processes, the influence of the hyporheic zone, responses
to changing seasonality, and consequences for nutrient fluxes at river
network scales. The position will be based in Durham, New Hampshire.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop, apply, and
evaluate models to address these questions. Modeling will focus on the
seasonally dynamic role of the hyporheic zone, a critical area of
biogeochemical activity that is expected to change as the arctic climate
warms. Initial model development will be at the reach scale, with
ultimate translation to the network scale.

A background in mathematics and hydrology or other environmental science
is essential. The successful candidate must have strong quantitative
skills, preferably with a programming background (including MATLAB or
R). This modeling effort is part of a larger collaborative science team
that includes researchers from multiple institutions taking field
measurements and conducting experiments in a number of arctic streams
located on the north slope of Alaska. The position is focused on
modeling, but the successful candidate will also be expected to
participate in seasonal field campaigns at Toolik Lake, Alaska during
spring, summer, and fall conditions.
