The division of Sea Ice Physics at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI)
has positions available for one PhD student and one postdoctoral
candidate. Both positions are limited to three years and based in
Bremerhaven, Germany.
The Sea Ice Physics division analyzes the role of sea ice in the climate
system, the causes of changing sea ice and its impacts on the oceanic
and atmospheric circulation, and the biological processes in the ocean
and sea ice. The work is backed up by remote sensing, direct
observations, and numerical models. In order to reach the best research
results, the AWI works closely with other European institutes.
PhD Student Position (Reference 32/D-KLI):
Due to the dramatic changes of the arctic sea ice and its central role
in the climate and biology of the Arctic, the correlation of physical,
environmental, and biological parameters will be studied. The data from
trans-arctic expeditions as well as numerical modeling is used. The
student is required to participate in an expedition to the central
Arctic with the research vessel Polarstern. The work demands a synthesis
of biological and physical observations. The student will work on
measurements and numerical modeling of the interaction of sea and sea
ice with biological processes.
Candidates must have a Master's or equivalent degree, preferably in
geophysics, physics, mathematics, meteorology, or oceanography.
Applicants should be interested in interdisciplinary work in sea ice
physics, physical oceanography, and marine biology.
Wherever applicable, PhD students will be enrolled in the Helmholtz
Graduate School, "POLMAR" (http://polmar.awi.de), or any other
postgraduate program.
Postdoctoral Position (Reference 33/D-KLI):
The candidate will analyze data from remote sensing and ice buoys to
validate model simulations of the development of the Arctic Ocean sea
ice system and to further develop an existing ocean-sea ice model. The
model should be applied to the reconstruction of the ocean and sea ice
development in the 20th century, and to scenario calculations for the
first half of the 21st century. The simulations are used for the
assessment of modified pathways of pollutants within the Arctic Ocean.
Candidates must have a doctoral degree in geophysics, physics,
meteorology, or oceanography. Interest in climate physics of the polar
region, measurements of climate parameters in the Arctic, and the
numerical simulation of physical environmental changes is expected.
Furthermore the willingness to participate in an expedition to the polar
region is crucial.
Applicants for either position should send the standard documentation
(curriculum vitae, publication list, certificates, etc.) citing the
applicable reference number no later than Wednesday, 30 June 2010 to:
