The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) seeks an enthusiastic
undergraduate or recent college graduate who is interested in summer
field research in Alaska. The overall objective of the research program
is to understand the ecosystem and global consequences of potential
future changes in arctic vegetation. The position will be based at
Toolik Field Station in arctic Alaska and will begin Wednesday, 9 June
2010 and end 25 August 2010.

The successful applicant will assist with fieldwork in a tussock tundra
site and laboratory work consisting of tasks such as plant sorting and
data entry. In addition, the successful applicant will attend weekly
seminars on the research at the station, will develop their own
individual research projects on a topic related to the program, and will
present their work at an informal symposium at Toolik Field Station.

Class background in plant ecology, botany, ecosystem ecology,
statistics, and computer science would be an advantage. Experience in
field or laboratory, experience with data analysis, and experience
working in a remote field site is preferred. Applicants should have
skills with plant identification, data collecting and recording, data
manipulation in Excel, and data analysis. Applicants must be willing to
work in the field, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

    Geophysics Program

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for a PhD
graduate studies opportunity in the geophysics program. The position is
based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful applicant will work on a project linking sea-ice
transport properties (dielectric properties, permeability, etc.) to ice
microstructure in collaboration with colleagues at the University of
Utah and Victoria University Wellington (New Zealand). The project
provides funding support (graduate student research fellowship starting
in fall 2010) and a tuition waiver. The successful candidate will work
as part of a team of geophysicists, mathematicians, and engineers
conducting microstructural analysis of sea ice at in situ temperatures
using x-ray computed tomography in a cold lab at UAF. The project also
has a strong fieldwork component, based out of northern Alaska.

    Anchorage, Alaska

The Alaska Office of The Wilderness Society is seeking a capable,
versatile, and proven leader to join their staff and direct their Arctic
Program Campaign. The position will be based in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Arctic Program Director will work and coordinate closely with the
Regional Director and other staff and is responsible for developing a
comprehensive campaign vision for their work in the Arctic; advancing
program goals to achieve that vision, including legislative,
administrative, and coalition-building campaign efforts; and developing
effective working relationships in arctic communities, the
administration, and with members of Congress. The successful candidate
will have a deep knowledge and proficiency of the issues and politics
involved in Alaska and have a demonstrated ability to navigate the
diverse worlds of arctic Alaska and Washington D.C. The Arctic Program
Director will be expected to contribute to fundraising efforts on behalf
of this campaign and will be responsible for overseeing other staff as
the campaign expands.

Primary responsibilities include:

- Developing a comprehensive vision to ensure enduring and
meaningful protection for the Arctic's most important wild lands and
resources, and a strategy for overcoming the political barriers to
achieving this vision;
- Further defining policies, programs, and projects that result in
improved management and administrative and legislative protections
for priority lands and waters identified in an arctic campaign plan;
and
- Working effectively with diverse partners in arctic communities as
well as with conservation and other coalition partners, providing
leadership for coalition efforts.

The successful candidate will have at least five years experience
working on conservation issues and/or political campaigns, preferably in
Alaska, including experience operating in a leadership capacity.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement campaign strategies that
successfully advance federal legislation and/or influence federal
administrative planning processes is essential, as is strong knowledge
of federal land management laws and policies including specific laws and
issues relevant to Alaska. A Bachelor's degree or its demonstrated
equivalent is required. Relevant graduate work will be highly regarded.
