The Department of Oceanography at the Naval Postgraduate School seeks
applications for an Assistant Research Professor position in the area of
sea ice modeling and ice-ocean-atmosphere interaction. The position will
be based in Monterey, California.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Physical Oceanography, or
Atmospheric or Polar Sciences with a minimum of three years of
postdoctoral research experience in the subject area. The school
specifically seeks a candidate with promise for long-term creativity and
research excellence. Priority consideration will be given to the
applicants who have strong theoretical, modeling, and observational
skills related to sea ice dynamics and thermodynamics. Demonstrated
expertise in sea ice modeling and coupling of sea ice to ocean and/or
atmospheric models is required. Experience with employing sea ice models
into regional and/or global climate models and use of high performance
computing for such applications is highly desired.

The successful candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team
developing a regional arctic climate model. He/she will also be expected
to complement, enhance, and eventually play a leadership role in the
ongoing sea ice and polar climate research of the Department of
Oceanography. This is a research faculty position that is renewable
annually depending upon the availability of reimbursable funds.
Therefore the candidate's ability to successfully compete for external
research grants and/or contracts is essential.

skills, experience, and enthusiasm to help develop and expand their
company operations in the area of remote field safety, field safety
training, and field medical training for extreme and polar environments.
The position will be based in Denver, Colorado.

The principle focus of this position will be to develop and oversee a
comprehensive and diverse training program that addresses many different
extreme and polar environmental conditions and situations. Significant
travel may be required. The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience
managing and/or working in these specific areas:

- Outdoor and/or adventure education;
- Cold weather (winter/polar) outdoor work and/or expedition
experience;
- Technical outdoor skills (e.g., ropes, climbing, winter camping,
mountaineering, glacier travel);
- Remote cold weather expedition planning and/or participation;
- Advanced wilderness first aid training and/or instruction;
- Preparing for remote field emergency response;
- Search and rescue;
- Risk management ;
- Familiarity with OSHA and General Industry Safety standards and
programs;
- Strong communication skills (written, verbal, and phone) and
excellent interpersonal skills;
- An ability to work well both in a team environment and
independently; and
- Supervisory experience (preferred).

The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) seeks an
advanced-level geologist to implement a new applied geologic hazards
evaluation program involving studies of coastal processes and
geomorphology, and managing geologic field project teams throughout the
state of Alaska. The position will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful applicant will use expertise in advanced principles of
surficial geology, geomorphology, and coastal processes to prepare and
publish maps and reports on natural hazards in Alaska, with a special
emphasis on the coastal environment. This position will work
independently or collaboratively in all aspects of the work, from
writing proposals and compiling published data to collecting new field
data and preparing maps and reports for publication. Project work will
be carried out in conjunction with other DGGS staff and contractors, as
appropriate.

Specific relevant specialties or areas of interest will ideally include
one or more of the following: subsidence, landslides, coastal retreat
(erosion), rising sea level, flooding from rivers and sea, beach loss,
sand accumulation, sand removal by waves, and related issues. A
demonstrated ability to recognize and map salient landforms in the field
is critical.

  1. Geophysical Institute seeks Postdoctoral Candidate
    Fairbanks, Alaska

The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is
seeking applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of thermal
infrared remote sensing, specifically as applied to geothermal
exploration. The selected candidate will join the remote sensing group
at the Geophysical Institute, UAF (http://www.gi.alaska.edu/remsense/),
work in close collaboration with the Alaska Center for Energy and Power
(http://www.uaf.edu/acep/), and lead the task on airborne thermal
infrared data acquisition, processing, and interpretation.

Experience in use of thermal infrared imaging equipment, airborne data
acquisition planning, image mosaicing and georeferencing, and thermal
infrared data interpretation is required. A strong background in geology
and geophysics, GIS, and computational skills is beneficial. The work
will involve limited field work and interaction with community members
in Alaska. Good interpersonal and communication (oral and written)
skills are highly desired.

Applicants should have PhD degree (already received, or having completed
all requirements and waiting graduation) in a relevant discipline.
Duties include:

- Working with the project to setup an airborne data acquisition
system that will acquire images in visible through infrared regions
of the spectrum, along with other potential instruments;
- Flight planning and coordinating with field crew for reference
data collection;
- Supervision of data acquisition campaign;
- Data processing (image mosaicing; georeferencing; integrating in a
GIS system);
- Data analysis and interpretation (generating target exploration
maps, quantitative estimates of geothermal prospect); and
- Publishing and communicating results to research/community
partners.
