  1. Session Announcement and Call for Abstracts
C23: Advances in Observations, Theory, and Modeling Related to the
Mechanisms of External Forcing on the Middle Atmosphere
    38th COSPAR Scientific Assembly
    18-25 July 2010
    Bremen, Germany

Organizers of Session C23, "Advances in Observations, Theory, and
Modeling Related to the Mechanisms of External Forcing on the Middle
Atmosphere," announce a call for abstracts. The session will be convened
at the 38th Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) Scientific Assembly,
scheduled for 18-25 July 2010 in Bremen, Germany.

Papers are invited for a session on observational, modeling, and
theoretical aspects of the middle atmosphere response to external
forcing from space. These forcings include, but are not restricted to,
energetic particle precipitation from solar or magnetospheric origin,
solar electromagnetic (E-M) fluxes, cosmic rays, and meteors.
Contributions in the following areas are welcome:

- Satellite and ground-based observations related to such forcings;
- Observations of the impact of these forcings on the composition,
chemistry, and dynamics of the middle atmosphere and lower
thermosphere and ionosphere;
- Numerical and theoretical analyses of the middle atmosphere
response to these forcings;
- Coupling of high latitude response with low latitudes or the lower
atmosphere; and
- Investigations of the effect on the atmospheric response to these
forcings from climate change.

Contributions using comprehensive general circulation models to
investigate coupling between different atmospheric regions are
encouraged. Abstract submissions are due by Friday, 19 February 2010.
Details on abstract submission are available at:
http://cospar-assembly.org/.

Abstract Deadline: Friday, 19 February 2010.

  1. Call for Abstracts
Life in the Cold: The Biogeochemistry of Icy Environments
    Goldschmidt Conference
    13-18 June 2010
    Knoxville, Tennessee

Organizers of a session entitled "Life in the Cold: The Biogeochemistry
of Icy Environments" announce a call for abstracts. The session will be
convened at the Goldschmidt Conference, scheduled for 13-18 June 2010 in
Knoxville, Tennessee.

The session will focus on research related to the diversity,
distribution, functions, and preservation of microbial communities and
biosignatures in polar and alpine snow and ice environments, and their
links to and dependence on the availability and fluxes of specific
geochemical inputs, such as organic matter and nutrients. Abstracts
related to field and laboratory studies of life and biogeochemical
processes in extreme cold settings that are characterized by low water
activities, low nutrients, low temperatures, and high UV radiation
levels are welcome. This could include research related to the
habitability of icy environments, the characterization of the
biogeochemistry, microbiology, and biosignatures in cryoconite holes,
subglacial aquatic environments, or the microbial communities and
processes on glacier surfaces. Laboratory studies that focus on
microbial/organic - ice/snow interactions, on the adaptations to and
preservation of life's biosignatures at subzero temperatures, or on
radiation effects and consequences with applications to terrestrial and
planetary studies, are all welcome.

Instructions on the submission process are available at:
http://www.goldschmidt2010.org/abstracts/instructions.

Abstract Deadline: Sunday, 21 February 2010, 23:59 UTC.

  1. Open Town Hall Meeting - Distributed Biological Observatory
    Pacific Arctic Group
American Geophysical Union Ocean Sciences Meeting
    Thursday, 25 February 2010
    Portland, Oregon

The international Pacific Arctic Group is sponsoring an Open Town Hall
meeting at the American Geophysical Union Ocean Sciences Meeting in
Portland, Oregon to discuss the development of a Distributed Biological
Observatory (DBO) in the Pacific arctic region. The meeting will be held
Thursday, 25 February 2010 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. PST in room
D136 of the Oregon Convention Center.

The marine system in the Pacific arctic region is experiencing
unprecedented seasonal sea ice retreat and seawater warming resulting in
biological changes and the potential for ecosystem reorganization. This
open session will discuss and solicit input on the development of a
marine DBO in the Pacific arctic region, a recommendation resulting from
a NOAA-sponsored multidisciplinary and international workshop in May
2009. The DBO would include biological and supportive physical sampling
at explicit regional sites using a collaborative international network
of logistical support to track shifts in ecosystem structure concomitant
with climate change. The target audience consists of biological and
environmental scientists interested in developing a biological observing
network in the Pacific marine sector. This forum will also be of
interest to both U.S. and international science managers working to
develop a network of observing systems in polar regions, such as the
Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) and Arctic Observing
Network (AON) programs.
