The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) would like to announce new
data sets that have recently been made available. Descriptions of the
data sets and links to view them are provided below.
Sea Ice Edge Location and Extent in the Russian Arctic, 1933-2006
This data set provides ice edge locations and ice extents derived from
an analysis of Russian Sea Ice Charts from the Arctic and Antarctic
Research Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia. For further information and
to access the data, please to: http://nsidc.org/data/g02176.html.
The Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment (AIDJEX)
A DVD documentary of the Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment (AIDJEX)
second pilot study from March through May 1972 is now available. The
1972 pilot study was in preparation for the AIDJEX main experiment of
1975 to 1976. The study included a main camp on drifting sea ice in the
Beaufort Sea north of Alaska along with two satellite camps forming a
station triangle with a 100 km side length. For further information and
to order the product, please to: http://nsidc.org/data/g02183.html.
Glacier Photograph Collection
Since January of 2008, the online collection has more than doubled in
size to include over 10,000 glacier photos. Additions to the collection
include thousands of aerial photographs taken by Austin Post for the
USGS Ice and Climate Project. These vertical and oblique aerial
photographs are surveys of US glaciers and were taken between the late
1950s and early 1990s, creating the most comprehensive photographic
collection and study of US glaciers. For further information and to
access the data, please go to: http://nsidc.org/data/g00472.html.
Central Asia Temperature and Precipitation Data, 1879-2003
Long-term data in high elevation regions of Central Asia are sparse.
This data set extends publicly available Central Asia station data
forward in time and encompasses new station data. Records are from 298
stations in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and
Uzbekistan. For further information and to access the data, please go
to: http://nsidc.org/data/g02174.html.
Ice Draft and Ice Velocity Data in the Beaufort Sea, 1990 to 2003
This data set provides measurements of ice draft and ice velocity over
the continental shelf of the Eastern Beaufort Sea. Observations are made
using two types of self-contained Upward Looking Sonar (ULS) moored near
the sea floor: an Ice Profiling Sonar (IPS) to record the ice draft data
and an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) to obtain the ice
velocity data. For further information and to access the data, please go
to: http://nsidc.org/data/g02177.html.
Arctic Sea Ice Melt Pond Statistics and Maps, 1999, 2000 and 2001
This data set provides information on melt pond coverage and size at
four central arctic sites. Coverage statistics are for 500m cells of 10
x 10km images. The data are derived using maximum likelihood
classification of high-resolution visible band imagery. For further
information and to access the data, please go to:
http://www.nsidc.org/data/g02159.html.
