Denali Workforce Development anticipates a need for archaeological field
technicians to assist contractors with archaeological field surveys over
the next few years.

Denali has partnered with the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) to
sponsor two courses during the spring and summer 2009 semesters to train
archaeology technicians. The deadline for enrollment is Friday, 30
January 2009.

Trained archaeological technicians will be able to:
- Understand archaeological research designs and impacts on field
investigations;
- Competently apply field survey, excavation and documentation methods
(including basic mapping, use of total station, line-level,
stratigraphic profiling, and excavation techniques); - Understand basic
problems in subarctic stratigraphy, taphonomy, site formation and site
disturbance factors;
- Gain experience working in remote field settings;
- Evaluate the context of archaeological finds;
- Work independently as well as in a team environment; and
- Transfer valuable skills to future employment opportunities.

If you enjoy this type of work and want to continue your education, the
courses can be applied towards an anthropology degree at UAF.

The fieldwork location is a 13,000 year old multi-component site near
Delta Junction, Mead Site.

Denali has contracted Northern Land Use Research, Inc. (NLUR) of
Fairbanks to provide archaeological services including field surveys.
Summer employment opportunities for enrolled students who successfully
complete the courses will be coordinated with NLUR and subject to their
hiring process and procedures.
