The Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth seeks applications for a
PhD student in ice coring studies of climate change, starting in fall
2009. The prospective student should be interested in using advanced
microscopy techniques along with other materials science methods for
studying snow and firn microstructure and transport processes for ice
core interpretation of the NEEM Deep Ice Core. The impact of yearly,
decadal-scale, and longer term changes in local climate leave a lasting
record in the physical nature of the snow and firn that also impact
interstitial processes; understanding the processes of change in the
firn is important for decoding the record of abrupt climate change.
Analysis of the NEEM Ice Core from Greenland is an international,
collaborative effort between many universities.
Candidates should have a background in engineering, geology, glaciology,
chemistry, mathematics, or environmental sciences. The student will take
a variety of courses in the engineering and other departments at
Dartmouth to provide the integrated knowledge necessary to contribute to
understanding ice core records of past climate change.
Support includes tuition and an annual stipend.
