Under the auspices of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research
(SCAR) project Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate (ASPeCt) and the
Antarctic Sea Ice in the IPY project for the International Polar Year, a
workshop will be held 23-24 March 2009, in Il Ciocco, Lucca, Italy. The
main purpose of the workshop is to review and establish joint data
analyses from two late-winter cruises to the Antarctic Sea Ice Zone,
both made during September and October 2007. An extensive satellite
remote sensing campaign with designated IceSAT altimetry, RadarSAT
images, and EnviSAT ASAR images coincided with the surface measurements.
For more information on the Sea Ice Mass Balance in the Antarctic
(SIMBA) activities, please go to:
http://www.utsa.edu/lrsg/Antarctica/SIMBA. For further information on
the Sea Ice Physics and Ecosystem Experiment (SIPEX) activities, please
go to: http://www.sipex.aq.
The workshop is open to all and may present opportunities for
interaction between participants and interested members of the remote
sensing and modeling communities, and from other cruises to the
Antarctic sea ice during the IPY period.
Many of the workshop participants will be attending the Gordon Research
Conference on Polar Marine Science, held the preceding week (15-20 March
2009) at the same location. Information on that meeting is available at:
http://www.grc.org.
The cost of attending the conference is 144 Euros per night (single
occupancy) or 104 Euros per night (double occupancy). The fee covers
registration, accommodation, meals, and coffee breaks for both days of
the conference.
Each participant is responsible for making his/her own travel
arrangements, as well as his/her own booking at the hotel in
Italy. At the time of booking, please contact Mr. Gianpaolo Lucchesi
(prenotazioni [at] ciocco.it) and state you are attending the "Antarctic Sea
Ice Workshop - IPY Cruises"
If you are interested in attending the Antarctic Sea Ice Workshop,
please send an email to both Steve Ackley and Klaus Meiners.
