The University of Durham seeks a postdoctoral research scientist to
address one of the major uncertainties in the modeling of
land-atmosphere coupling in climate models, namely the quantification of
landscape snow-cover feedbacks in climate models, using visible,
infrared and microwave data on snow. Coupling mechanisms will be tested
in the Hadley Centre Global Circulation Model. The post is fixed-term
for 30 months duration.
As part of the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) Climate
Theme the successful candidate will utilize Earth Observation (EO) data
from the visible, thermal and microwave bands, as well as from active
radar instruments to obtain high latitude topography and a range of snow
and frozen ground quantities. The researcher will further develop, in
close collaboration with the UK Met Office Hadley Centre and UK Met
Office, Reading, as well as other University collaborations within the
UK, EO-constrained estimates of the changing state of the land surface
and develop an interface between the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator
(JULES) land-surface model and EO data. This will lead to improved
estimates of coupling strength between land surface, soil moisture,
snow-cover and vegetation.
Qualifications:
- A PhD or equivalent in a relevant earth system science, physical
or mathematical science discipline;
- Experience analyzing large remote sensing or numerical model
datasets;
- Excellent scientific computing skills (including Fortran
programming and familiarity with software for handling and
processing EO data);
- Ability and willingness to work as part of a team and to
collaborate with other scientists both within NCEO and
internationally;
- Ability to write scientific reports and papers and to communicate
results in oral presentations at meetings and conferences; and
- Excellent numeracy skills.
