The Institute of Northern Engineering and the Institute of Arctic
Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, announce a postdoctoral
position in microbial ecology. The position will apply stable isotope
probing techniques to investigate aerobic and anaerobic methanotrophic
microorganisms in arctic lakes.
This position is funded by as part of the project "Source
Characterization and Temporal Variation of Methane Seepage from
Thermokarst Lakes in Response to Arctic Climate Change," sponsored by
the Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory
(NETL-DOE). Candidates should hold a PhD in microbial ecology, biology
and/or biogeochemistry and have experience in molecular microbial
ecology and/or stable isotope techniques. Primary responsibilities will
include performing stable isotope probing studies of sediment and water
samples collected from arctic lakes, under both aerobic and anaerobic
conditions. This portion of the collaborative study aims to identify
methanotrophs, reveal the flow of methane-derived carbon into the
microbial food web and demonstrate its entry into higher trophic levels.
A willingness to participate in fieldwork in remote arctic environments
would be an advantage.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Interested candidates should email a CV (listing names and contact
details of at least two referees) and a short letter of research
interests to:
