The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks a
PhD student to participate in a multidisciplinary study of
glacier-generated seismicity. This funded, 3-year project includes a
large-scale field campaign that the student will be deeply involved
with, including the deployment of seismometers, Global Positioning
Systems (GPS), and time-lapse cameras at Icy Bay, Alaska. Using multiple
geophysical approaches, the study will attempt to understand the sources
and mechanisms underlying glacier-generated seismicity. Specifically,
the focus will be on the relationships between ice velocity variations,
iceberg calving and glacier generated seismic events.
Candidates should have a strong background in physics and / or
geophysics. This project will require not only competency in data
management and analysis, but also high-level computational methods.
Analysis and interpretation of the seismic data will form the core of
the student's work. The student will be advised by both glaciology and
seismology faculty.
