A workshop will be convened on "Understanding climate impacts in
sub-arctic seas: Ecological issues and comparative approaches" during
the 2008 Ocean Sciences Meeting on Tuesday, 4 March 2008, in Orlando,
Florida. The Ocean Sciences meeting is co-sponsored by the American
Society of Limnology and Oceanography, American Geophysical Union, The
Oceanography Society, and Estuarine Research Federation.
Workshop Description:
The workshop will combine panel presentations and open discussion of
ongoing programs, the approaches being taken in either field work or
synthesis activities, and the expected goals of several programs. Four
panelists will present on the following programs:
-the Bering Ecosystem Study (BEST),
-the Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Program (BSIERP),
-the Norwegian Ecosystem Studies of Sub-arctic Seas (ESSAS) program
(NESSAS), and
-the Marine Ecosystems of Norway and the U.S. (MENU) program.
The last half hour of the workshop will be devoted to discussions of
sampling design, approaches to program synthesis, how to maximize
results from comparative studies, and other topics of interest to the
participants. The workshop is sponsored by the National Science
Foundation Bering Ecosystem Study (BEST) and the regional GLOBEC
program, Ecosystem Studies of Sub-Arctic Seas (ESSAS).
