Glaciers and Ice Caps have been identified as an essential climate
variable by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
As a response, the European Space Agency (ESA) has initiated a new
activity - GlobGlacier - to establish operational services for glacier
monitoring from space. Glaciers from key regions of the world will be
covered, including massifs in Alpine and Northern Europe, Africa, Asia,
South America, North America and New Zealand.
As part of this program, the School of Geosciences at the University of
Edinburgh seeks to appoint a PhD candidate in Glacier Remote Sensing.
The aim of the project is to survey changes in the mass of glaciers
distributed around the globe using a variety of satellite based
techniques. The project provides training in glaciology and radar remote
sensing, and there will be opportunities to attend international summer
schools, workshops, conferences, and ESA progress meetings throughout
the project.
Applications are encouraged from candidates with a background in
physics, mathematics, geosciences, or a similar subject. Experience in
remote sensing, computer programming, and GIS would also be of benefit.

The PhD start date is December 2007 or soon thereafter and is
fully-funded with a stipend of 12,300 pounds sterling tax free for 3
years and University fees are paid. The PhD is open to international
candidates.
