The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) at the University of
Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for three tenure-track,
full-time Assistant/Associate Professors in the Institute of Marine
Science located in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Successful candidates will have the interest and capability to play a
substantial role in the development of the Alaska Ocean Observing System
(AOOS) (http://ak.aoos.org/). This recruitment is part of the SFOS
vision to strengthen the UAF marine science program by adding at least
twelve new faculty over the next several years.
Creative individuals with strong scientific and academic expertise from
any of the major oceanographic disciplines (biological, chemical,
geological, and physical oceanography) and who augment existing
expertise are encouraged to apply. Possible areas of focus include, but
are not limited to, shelf-slope dynamics, air-sea or air-sea-ice
interaction, sediment dynamics, microbial ecology, and organic and/or
tracer chemistry. The successful candidate will be expected to build a
field program through external research funding that advances ocean
observing and data collection. SFOS is especially interested in
candidates who will work in collaborative programs that address marine
ecosystem issues, including fisheries, in the Gulf of Alaska, Bering
Sea, and Arctic Ocean.
Candidates should be enthusiastic about graduate and undergraduate
teaching and will teach core and specialty oceanography courses.
Successful candidates will demonstrate interest in mentoring, advising,
and recruiting graduate students. Two of the positions will be based in
Fairbanks and the third may be based at the UAF Seward Marine Center in
Seward, Alaska, which is being developed as the SFOS logistics center
for ocean observing.
Qualified applicants must possess a PhD in oceanography or related field
from an accredited university by the time of hire, must be proficient in
English, have university-level teaching ability, and must have a strong
research and publication record appropriate to their experience and date
of degree.
