The University of Jyvaskyla, Finland announces a PhD position as part of
the Academy of Finland project "Carbon and energy flows in high-latitude
water bodies," led by Milla Rautio of Universite Laval, Canada and
University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. The project is linked with the IPY
project "Circumpolar freshwater lake research and data management
network," led by Kirsten Christoffersen, University of Copenhagen,
Denmark.
The successful candidate will carry out research in the Kilpisjarvi
region in Finnish Lapland in a topic related to the control and nature
of carbon fluxes and subsequent trophic structure in northern lakes.
Specifically, the PhD project will evaluate the implications of
different autotrophic carbon sources (planktonic and benthic
photosynthesis) and heterotrophic production (bacterial production) for
the feeding patterns and trophic position of zooplankton and their
interspecific interactions. The research methods will harness the use of
advanced ecosystem monitoring techniques, including the evaluation of
water column carbon properties by synchronous fluorescence scans and
trophic structure determination by stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes.
A part of the sampling and field measurements will be carried out during
the polar winter. The fieldwork has been planned to start latest in
February 2008.
Applicants should have a Master's degree in biology, limnology,
environmental sciences, or a closely related subject. The successful
candidate will be located at University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. There are
opportunities to spend a period as a visiting graduate student in
Quebec, Canada. The salary will be about 20,000 Euros annually.
