The U.S. Arctic Research Commission (USARC) is tasked by law to increase
opportunities for international cooperation in scientific research among
Arctic-rim countries and to facilitate the formulation of U.S. national
policy for the Arctic.

To this end, USARC Commissioners and staff, and representatives from the
U.S. Department of State, Senator Lisa Murkowski's office, and the State
of Alaska will be traveling to Norway and Svalbard on 18-22 June 2007 to
learn more about and see first-hand the research being conducted in the
Arctic during the International Polar Year by scientists from the U.S.,
Norway, Sweden, Germany, Japan, UK, France, Russia, Italy, China, Korea,
and other nations. USARC seeks new opportunities for international
cooperation and collaboration (e.g., Arctic Observing Network) in order
to communicate back to the U.S. research community and to those
responsible for establishing government policy and creating and
sustaining research programs.

The USARC Commissioners announce the following itinerary and invite
scientists and others in the U.S. who may have or be interested in
forming collaborative research initiatives with Norway and other nations
that have research stations in Svalbard to submit comments, questions,
or suggestions in order to facilitate the Commission's efforts.
