Finnmark 2007 is a dog-sledding scientific expedition that will cover
1,500 kilometers from near Grense-Jakobselv on the Norwegian-Russian
border through numerous reindeer-herding camps and communities in
Finnmark to the North Sea. From March to mid-April, the scientific team
will investigate early impacts of climate change on environment, snow
composition (in partnership with the NASA Global Snowflake Network),
reindeer food strategies, as well as traditional economy and cultural
dynamics in the area. The aim of the expedition is to report on how the
Sami are facing social and cultural survival in a fragile environment.
Finnmark 2007 is supported by the Royal Geographical Society (London),
Norwegian Polar Institute, Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, and the
United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
