The Alfred Wegener Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral position in climate dynamics. This full-time position will be located in Bremerhaven, Germany.
The successful candidate will work on the Advanced Prediction in Polar regions and beyond: modelling, observing system design and LInkages associated with a Changing Arctic climate (APPLICATE) project. The APPLICATE project will work to enhance weather and climate prediction capabilities in the Arctic, Europe, Asia, and North America, with a focus on the Arctic and its influence on weather and climate at mid-latitudes.
Tasks will include:
- Development of metrics for climate model evaluation,
- Analysis of systematic errors of CMIP5 and CMIP6 models in the Arctic,
- Determining the growth of systematic model error across time scales, and
- Fostering the understanding of the origin of long-standing systematic errors in the Arctic through carefully designed sensitivity experiments.
Requirements for this position include:
- A PhD in meteorology, oceanography, climate sciences, physics, mathematics, or information technology;
- Skill and proficiency in Fortran;
- Fluency in English; and
- Ability to effectively work in teams and meet deadline.
Additional preferred skills include experience with complex models of the coupled climate system, or their subcomponents, and a proven record of publishing and securing external funding.
