The Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS) is searching for a self-motivated individual with excellent organizational and communication skills to coordinate – and serve as the primary AOOS staff – for two new AOOS projects enhancing regional ocean data sharing. This is a full-time position based in Anchorage, available for 2 years, with the opportunity to extend longer as additional funding opportunities allow. The Coordinator will report to the Executive Director, and work closely with AOOS staff, the AOOS Data Management team at Axiom Data Science, and partners and stakeholders relevant to these projects.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Developing work plans and expected outcomes for the two projects with the AOOS Executive Director, project steering committees, and Axiom Data Science staff;
- Engaging federal researchers through the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee (IARPC) collaboration teams to achieve project goals;
- Gathering and synthesizing scientist and stakeholder input into development of a Bering Sea Dashboard/Report Card, building on NPFMC IEA indicators and status reports and the Arctic Report Card, as part of a proposed State of Alaska’s Coasts and Oceans synthesized status report;
- Interacting with project steering committees to assess data requirements and availability for current and potential new indicators;
- Collaborating with the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy in developing information products and outreach materials, quarterly reports and community engagement activities;
- Organizing regional workshops, facilitating working groups and writing proposals as needed;
- Giving public presentations and representing AOOS and the projects in public forums; and
- Providing outreach content to newsletters, the AOOS website and Facebook page.
Required Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in science, environmental or computer science field although master’s degree is preferred;
- Minimum two years relevant experience to Alaska;
- Strong understanding of scientific data formats, platforms and technologies;
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication and presentation skills, including ease in communicating complex concepts in a clear, effective manner for a general audience;
- Organizational skills necessary to meet multiple concurrent deadlines;
- Strong interpersonal skills essential to working with a variety of partners and stakeholders;
- Experience and skills for facilitating groups with diverse opinions;
- Demonstrated strong analytical skills, including an ability to synthesize large amounts of scientific information; and
- Proficiency in Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. High level of internet and email competency.
Preferred
- Experience in writing proposals; and
- Experience in Bering Sea region.
