The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy (ACCAP) is seeking an energetic graduate student enrolled at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). This position is funded for two years and will be located in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful candidate will evaluate the Sea Ice for Walrus Outlook (SIWO) – a web-based resource designed to support Alaska Native communities and other stakeholders interested in sea ice and walruses in northwest Alaska, and National Weather Service (NWS) sea ice forecasts via feedback from community observers. The purpose of the research is to understand barriers to information access and use, the extent that SIWO observations supported NWS operations, and how improvements may be made to further support coastal resilience. The evaluation will be conducted in partnership with Alaska Sea Grant, the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States, Eskimo Walrus Commission, and University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct and analyze data from interviews with SIWO users and developers,
  • Conduct and analyze data from a web-based questionnaire,
  • Review other available information on sea ice and impacts to subsistence walrus hunting, and
  • Travel to northwest Alaska.

Minimum Qualifications include:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in social science, natural resources, physical science, or relevant related
    knowledge and experience;
  • Familiarity with climate-related impacts in Alaska;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to conduct literature reviews;
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate information and research results;
  • Knowledge of interdisciplinary research methods, analytical procedures, and climate change
    impacts and adaptation in Alaska and the Arctic;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writing; and
  • Strong analytical skills, including collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data.
