Organizers announce a town hall meeting, Spin Top Arctic Ocean, taking place during Arctic Science Summit Week 2021 (ASSW2021). This meeting will be held online on 23 March 2021 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. GMT.
This town hall meeting is aimed to review understanding of the future Arctic Ocean as an open ocean, to identify the gaps in this understanding, and draw a roadmap for how these can be closed. Given the Arctic Ocean will be open for the most part of the year, what will it be like with accelerated ocean currents, energetic eddies, and waves? How will the open state affect the other components of the system?
The planned meeting outcome is a community paper to facilitate the UN Ocean Decade initiatives starting this year.
Some tentative discussion points include:
- Seasonally ice-free Arctic and “new” regimes of large-scale ocean circulation,
- Accelerated ocean currents at meso- and submesoscales,
- Enhanced ocean mixing (via more efficient near-inertial and tidal internal wave generation, etc.), and
- Energetic wind waves.
Organizers welcome suggestions for prospective discussion points to be raised during the meeting. Suggestions can be submitted online.
Town hall attendees need to register for the ASSW2021 online conference for the "business meeting and interim day".
