The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), the Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG) of the Arctic Council, the International Arctic Social Sciences Association (IASSA), the Sustaining Arctic Observing Network (SAON), in cooperation with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) announce several fellowships for 2022.

Available fellowships include:

  • IASC Fellowship Program 2022,
  • SDWG-IASSA-IASC Fellowship, and
  • SAON-IASC Fellowship.

The IASC Fellowship Program is meant to engage early career scientists in the work of the Working Groups (WGs) of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC): Atmosphere, Cryosphere, Marine, Social & Human, and Terrestrial. This year, organizers will offer six IASC Fellowships:

  • One IASC Fellow will be chosen per IASC WG (five in total), and
  • One IASC Indigenous Fellow: Based on recent recommendations from the IASC Action Group on Indigenous Engagement, IASC has expanded its Fellowship Program to include space specifically for Arctic early career Indigenous scholars. The IASC Indigenous Fellow can choose which IASC WG to get engaged in.

IASC Fellows are doctoral or postdoctoral researchers, who actively participate in selected activities of the IASC WGs. Fellows are expected to contribute scientifically and also to help organize specific activities and to help with reporting to the IASC Secretariat. Thus, the Fellowship Program provides the opportunity for Early Career Scholars (ECSs) to become involved in leading-edge scientific activities at a circum-Arctic and international level, to build an international network, and also to develop management skills. The level of involvement very much depends on the Fellow's interest.

Requirements for this fellowship include:

  • PhD student/candidate or postdoctoral researcher (up to five years past terminal degree excluding parental leave or similar);
  • Ability to commit to participating in the activities of one of an IASC WG for at least one year;
  • Ability to attend the two upcoming ASSW meetings: 26 March-1 April 2022 in Tromsø, Norway and 17-24 February 2023 in Vienna, Austria;
  • Located at an institution in an IASC member country; and
  • Have a good command of English.

The Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG) of the Arctic Council, the International Arctic Social Sciences Association (IASSA) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) will offer the inaugural SDWG-IASSA-IASC Fellowship to encourage an early career scholar to participate in and contribute to the work of the SDWG. The Fellowship will enable the recipient to get involved in the process of making research relevant for policy and contribute to policy recommendations. The duration of the Fellowship will be one year with an optional second year.

At the beginning of the fellowship, the Fellow would work with the SDWG Secretariat to identify three to four specific deliverables based on the Fellow´s knowledge, expertise, and areas of interest, and the current needs and activities of the SDWG. In addition, the Fellow would be asked to provide a written report of their experience with the Fellowship.

The SDWG-IASSA-IASC Fellow should:

  • Be an advanced Master student, Doctoral student/candidate, postdoctoral researcher, or early career scholar (including faculty members up to five years past PhD excluding parental leave or similar) with a social sciences / interdisciplinary research background relevant to the SDWG;
  • Commit to participating in the activities and meetings listed during the period of the fellowship;
  • Be excited about international teamwork, be open to cross-disciplinary work, and appreciate the need to engage between research science and policy-related institutions; and
  • Have a good command of English.

The Sustaining Arctic Observing Network (SAON) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) will be offering this year the first SAON-IASC Fellowship to support an early career researcher to get more involved in the work of SAON. As an open initiative uniting Arctic and non-Arctic nations and organizations, SAON holds a unique position in the facilitation of and planning for sustained Arctic observational networks in support of societal benefit. SAON has initiated the Roadmap for Arctic Observing and Data Systems (ROADS) as a planning framework to support its national and organizational partners. ROADS is at an initiating stage that presents many valuable opportunities to get involved. SAON envisions that a ROADS Fellow could engage in the evolving governance of the ROADS Advisory Panel or support alignment and integration across pilot efforts that are beginning to form thematic Expert Panels under ROADS. The ROADS principle for equitable inclusion of Indigenous people presents further opportunities for shaping the governance of the ROADS process at its earliest stages.

The SAON-IASC Fellow should:

  • Be a Doctoral student/candidate, postdoctoral researcher, or early career faculty member (up to five years past PhD excluding parental leave or similar);
  • Engaged in research relevant to SAON;
  • Have an affiliation with an institution in an IASC member country;
  • Commit to participating in the activities and meetings listed in the full announcement from January 2022 to March 2023;
  • Be excited about international teamwork and be open to cross-disciplinary work; and
  • Have a good command of English.
