The University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) Arctic Icebreaker Coordinating Committee (AICC), with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Polar Programs, is offering a 2023 Arctic Chief Scientist Training Cruise program for early career researchers.
This program includes a series of informational and pre-cruise planning meetings held virtually in March through May 2023, followed by an on-site orientation in Seward, Alaska and week-long transit and survey on the R/V Sikuliaq between Seward and Nome, Alaska (travel dates: 2-15 June 2023).
Participants will receive training in how to:
- Request and effectively utilize UNOLS vessels (and related facilities) for Arctic surveys;
- Plan, coordinate, and lead survey activities;
- Develop interpersonal skills for effective team leadership;
- Use scientific sampling equipment, shipboard data acquisition, and mission support tools onboard the vessel; and
- Navigate data archival and post-cruise reporting.
Mentorship will be provided by scientists from multiple disciplines as well as vessel and UNOLS technical staff. Participant costs (from within the U.S.) will be covered by NSF and small participant stipends are offered for field/research supplies and shipping. Space is limited and applicants must be employees at U.S. institutions or U.S. citizens working abroad.
Early career researchers (especially junior faculty and postdoctoral scholars) from diverse backgrounds, cultures, institution types, and research specialties are encouraged to apply.
