The Arctic Research Center at the University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for a postdoctoral position. This full-time, fixed-term position will be located in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to a National Science Foundation research project, Understanding the Changing Natural-Built Landscape in an Arctic Community: An Integrated Sensor Network in Utqiagvik, Alaska, regarding the implementation and utilization of a terrestrial micro-meteorological sensor network in the community of Utqiagvik, Alaska to assess how components of the built environment affect local conditions and the stability of permafrost. The successful candidate will have some project management responsibilities within the UVA Arctic Research Center, and will have opportunities to teach or contribute to courses on Arctic systems. The postdoc will have the flexibility to incorporate their own research ideas into existing UVA Arctic Research Center projects.
A PhD degree in Environmental Sciences or related field is required. Candidates should have a demonstrated publication record in Arctic system sciences and have experience working with micro-meteorological equipment and data, with an emphasis on complex datasets, and spatial and time series analyses. The Arctic Research Center also envisions the use of remote sensing and climate datasets to scale the locally collected data to the extent of the community of Utqiagvik and surrounding tundra landscapes. The work conducted at the Center is highly collaborative with practitioners from various types of institutions, as well as local community members. Therefore, candidates must have excellent leadership and communication skills, both oral and written. Candidates may also serve as a mentor for both graduate and undergraduate students.
Applications must be submitted online and include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the contact information for three individuals who can provide professional reference letters. This is a one-year appointment, with the potential for renewal for a second year, contingent upon satisfactory performance.
